It’s been 12 years since Angelo State has won back-to-back LSC Championships, but they’ll have a chance for that again after a 70-68 win over West Texas A&M in Saturday’s semifinal round at Allen Event Center.
Taylor Dorsey had one of the best individual performances in recent LSC Championship history, posting 35 points and six assists. But it was Lexi Murphy that came through in the clutch, untying the score twice in the final 1:12, including a huge 3-pointer with 40 seconds left. Murphy then sealed the game with two free throws, to finish with 17 points and eight rebounds.
The Rambelles improve to 24-4 and will play for the title on Sunday against the winner of Texas A&M-Kingsville and Tarleton State.
Angelo State has five LSC Championships, including last year’s dramatic final over WT in double-overtime. Before that, the Rambelles cut down the nets in 2004 and 2005.
Dorsey’s 35 points is tied for sixth-most in LSC Championship history and the most since 2010 when Abilene Christian’s Jamie Meyer set the record with 44. The senior became the 18th player in ASU history to score at least 1,000 points for her career at the end of the first half.
The win also helped ASU in the regional rankings as the Rambelles are still hopeful to gain the No. 1 see to host next week’s tournament.
The Lady Buffs, currently ranked third in the region, fall to 23-8 and will now get ready for the tournament.
In the fourth quarter, Angelo State pushed the lead out to 62-55, thanks to a long 3-pointer from Dorsey, who also had a steal and a layup. But WT wouldn’t quit, and scored seven straight points to tie the game after a driving layup from Sasha Watson.
That’s when Murphy took over, scoring the final eight points for ASU.
For the Lady Buffs, Watson led the way with 24 points to go along with rebounds. Alie Decker scored 21, thanks to six 3-pointers. Lilley Vander Zee had eight points and 10 boards as WT outrebounded Angelo State 46-38.
ASU’s Jasmine Prophet, the LSC Player of the Year, was again held to under double-figure scoring during this tournament, limited once more to foul trouble. She scored eight points coming off the bench but did have three blocks and two steals.
