For the second time in four years, Tarleton State is headed back to the LSC Championship final game after three starters scored in double figures in a 60-47 win over No. 8 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville.
As the fifth seed, TSU proved to be too strong – on both ends of the floor - Saturday night in the semifinal round at the Allen Event Center.
Hailey Mackenzie scored a game-high 15 points and had eight rebounds, while Ikpeaku Iwobi had 12 points and 12 boards. Tiara Tatum had 12 points and Bailey Wipff scored eight and led the team with three steals.
The TexAnns also forced 18 turnovers by Kingsville, which shot just 29 percent (9 of 31) from the floor in the second half and just 33.3 percent for the entire game.
TSU improved to 15-13 and will look to earn an automatic berth in next week’s regional tournament. But the TexAnns will have to beat No. 2 seed Angelo State on Sunday in the final at 1 p.m.
For Kingsville, who became the first team since the tournament moved to a neutral site in 2008 to knock off a No. 1 seed, the season ends at 14-14.
Tee Moore had 11 points for the Javelinas and Kaylee Kana came off the bench to post 10 points. Angelica Wilson had nine points and seven rebounds.
Tarleton jumped out to an 18-5 lead at the first quarter but Kingsville came back to trail just 31-22 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Javelinas stormed back to sliced the lead to 2 before Iwobi’s layup pushed it back to four at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth, Wipff drilled a 3-pointer on TSU’s first offensive possession and the TexAnns never looked back.
