With four starters in double figures, led by All-LSC standout Reggie Reid’s 20 points, Texas A&M-Commerce had little trouble getting past Angelo State in the Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball Championship Friday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
With the 76-63 win, the Lions (21-7) advanced to Saturday night’s semifinal round against the winner of West Texas A&M/Eastern New Mexico, which will be played back at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco.
But with Reid carrying the Lions in the first half with 11 points, his teammates got more involved in the second half. Trey Conrad and Aaron Horne had 12 and 14 points, respectively, after combining for just six points at the break. Willie Rooks also finished with 13 points.
The Lions controlled the glass as well, winning the boards 43-33, with Reid and Conrod each pulling down eight rebounds.
Commerce led by six at the half, and pushed the lead up to 13 before the Rams went on a run that trimmed the lead to just one with 8:04 left after Ran Tut’s layup. From there, the Lions regained control, going on a 15-3 run that virtually put the game away.
ASU, who had been to three straight LSC finals, had just two scorers in double figures, led by Kiair Crouch’s 14 off the bench. James Kirksey scored 13 for the Rams. But Ja’Michael Brown and Brandon Williams, a pair of third-team All-LSC selections, combined for just 10 points.
The Rams entered the weekend ranked 10th in the South Central region, so it’s likely their season ended Friday in Denton at 18-11 overall.
