Tarleton State entered the Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball Championship as one of the league’s hottest teams. And even a last-minute change of venue couldn’t derail the Texans, who had no problems advancing past Cameron, 63-49 in the quarterfinal round.
It was the first of four men’s game that were moved from Frisco to Kitty Magee Arena at Texas Woman’s University because of Thursday’s facility issue at Dr Pepper Arena. Tarleton made sure it will be one of the four teams heading back to Frisco for Saturday’s semifinal games. The Texans will tip off at 6 p.m. against the winner of UT Permian Basin/Midwestern State.
The Texans (20-10) have now won nine of their last 11 games, which actually began with an 11-point win over the Aggies back in late January. That win avenged a one-point loss to Cameron in Lawton back in early December.
But in Friday’s games against Cameron, TSU had three players score in double figures, led by Corinthian Ramsey, who had 20 points, thanks to four 3-pointers. Deshawn Riddick added 12 points, while Preston Enloe came off the bench to score 11. Josh Hawley, a member of the 2018 LSC All-Defensive team, controlled the paint, ripping down 16 rebounds.
Saturday’s game will be a quick turnaround for TSU, considering only seven players had more than two minutes of action.
The season ends for the Aggies at 11-17. Tyus Momoh was the only player in double figures with 11 points. Jalen Nicholas had 11 rebounds for Cameron, which had a hard time hitting shots, making just 3 of 24 attempts from 3-point land. JV Long, a third-team All-LSC selection this season, had just nine points on 4 of 12 shooting.
The victory not only moves Tarleton into the semifinal round, but certainly helps the Texans’ chances of getting into the regional tournament. TSU entered the week No. 9 for the eight-team regional. Of course, winning the LSC Championship outright would secure an automatic berth. TSU has won the tournament three times, including back-to-back titles in 2013-14.
