Despite trailing by 14 early in the fourth quarter, third-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce rallied to not only force overtime, but outlast No. 6 Cameron 93-89 for a quarterfinal victory at the Lone Star Conference Championship.
After struggling to score all game, the Lions finally got hot in the fourth, making 11 of 15 attempts (73.3 percent) to send the game into the extra session.
A jumper by Artaejah Gay with 3:50 to play in overtime, gave Commerce its first lead since a 9-8 advantage back in the first quarter. But Brianna Wise, who led the Lions with 28 points, made the final three free throws to seal the win. Wise, who was 14 of 18 from the stripe and also dished out five assists, got some help from Princess Davis, who had 27 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in overtime. Gay and Melanie Ransom each scored 10 points.
The Lions (18-11) will advance to Saturday’s semifinal round (12 p.m.) to face the winner of West Texas A&M-Midwestern State.
Although it looked as if the Aggies would advance to the next round, their season comes to an end at 13-16.
Ava Battese tied a school record with seven 3-pointers made on nine attempts for a game-high 29 points. However, trailing by 3 in the final 10 seconds, Cameron couldn’t get a good look for to tie the game and settled for a two-point shot that misfired, leading to the final free throws for the Lions.
Cameron’s Jamie Bonnarens had 22 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in regulation. Jazmine Luster came off the bench to post 12 points and six rebounds.
The Lions entered the tournament losing their final two regular-season games and five of the last seven. To advance to next week’s regional tournament, Commerce will likely have to win the entire tournament here in Frisco to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Commerce hasn’t won the LSC Championship since 2007, which was also the program’s only tournament final appearance.
