LSC Women's Basketball Weekly Release - Week 6

Five Lone Star Conference women’s basketball programs were unbeaten last week with Lubbock Christian, Midwestern State and West Texas A&M picking up multiple wins and Oklahoma Christian and Texas A&M-Commerce going 1-0. St. Edward’s and UTPB and St. Mary’s and Angelo State split their matchups last week.

LSC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The LSC Women’s Basketball Championship is set for March 2-5-6, 2021, with quarterfinal games on campus sites on Tuesday, March 2. The four winning teams will advance to the final site at the highest remaining seed to play semifinal games on Friday, March 5, followed by the championship game on Saturday, March 6. The top eight teams will qualify for the tournament based on the recently announced basketball point rating system. The divisional champions will automatically qualify for the tournament and be seeded according to the point rating system. All teams must play a minimum of 11 games to qualify for the conference tournament.

OFFENSIVE

Lexy Hightower continued to power the Lady Buffs offense as they picked up a pair of home victories over Texas A&M-Kingsville to run their win streak to six games, moving to 8-1 overall with a 7-1 mark in LSC action. The Amarillo High product went 16-of-24 (66.7 percent) from the floor including 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from behind the arc to average 18.5 points per game to go along with six rebounds (two offensive, four defensive), 11 assists and four steals. The senior moved into a tie for second place on WT's all-time list of made three pointers with 214 while jumping three spots to eighth on the scoring list with 1,456. She has now scored at least 20 points in six of WT's nine games this season.

Juliana Robertson, Lubbock Christian, SR, Social Work, F, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS
Juliana Robertson led LCU defensively to a pair of wins over Texas A&M International, which ended TAMIU's seven-game unbeaten run and extended the Lady Chaps’ home win streak to 83 straight games overall and 71 straight in conference play. Robertson, who averaged a +24.5-per-game plus/minus, opened the weekend series with 11 rebounds Friday and followed Saturday with a +30 in 22 minutes of action. The senior helped limit the Dustdevils to 12-of-40 (30 percent) from the field in the finale and just 40.7 percent (33-of-81) from the field over the two games. Her weekly totals included 7.5 rebounds (per game), six assists, three steals and a block, while shooting 66.7% from the field.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
      Brooklin Bain, Oklahoma Christian, lifted a shorthanded OC squad with only eight available players to its third road win (in four tries) this season, recording her second consecutive double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 56-47 win at Angelo State. In a game in which neither team shot well (OC 35.7 percent, ASU 30.5 percent), Bain hit 8-of-14 field-goal attempts (57.1 percent). All of her rebounds came at the defensive end, limiting Angelo State’s second-chance opportunities and helping OC post a 47-37 rebounding advantage.
 
     Lana Marov, Angelo State, was a huge asset for the Belles against both the Oklahoma Christian and St. Mary's, scoring 43 points in the three games and contributing to the Belles first win of the season. Marov led the way offesively, shooting 16-of-36 from the field and 11-of-24 from beyond the three point line. Marov shot .417 from the field and .458 from long distance while grabbing 25 rebounds, two assists, and one steal in the process for Angelo State.
 
      Ashton Duncan, Lubbock Christian, led LCU offensively to a pair of wins over Texas A&M International, which ended TAMIU's seven-game win streak and extended LCU's home win streak to 83 straight games (71 straight conference wins). She averaged 13.5 points per game, posting 15 Friday and 12 Saturday against the Dustdevils. All 27 points scored were from beyond the arc, as she hit five three-pointers in the opener (on 10 attempts) and was 4-of-5 from long range Saturday.  Duncan also had four steals and four assists on the week.
 
      Morgan Lenahan, Midwestern State, centered a solid defensive effort helping Midwestern State extend its longest winning streak in seven seasons with a sweep at Texas Woman's. The senior from Haddonfield, N.J. scored in double figures in both games to average 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds against the Pioneers. Lenahan scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to go along with a block and a steal while helping the Mustangs hold TWU to 33.3 percent shooting in a 67-51 win on Friday. The 5-11 guard delivered an all-around stat line of 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists as MSU limited Texas Woman's to 28.3 percent shooting in a 46-37 win on Saturday. The Mustangs ran their winning streak to five games improving to 7-2 on the season.
 
      Madeline Stephens, Angelo State, key defensive work was critical against the St. Mary's and Oklahoma Christian this past week for the Belles. The 6-0 wing from Lubbock was a huge asset for Angelo State underneath the rim, grabbing 32 total rebounds, nine offensive and 23 defensive, while blocking eight total shots over the week. Stephens also scored 27 points for the Belles, while dishing out a pair of assists.
 
      Abby Spurgin, West Texas A&M, had a dominant doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville during LSC crossover action at the First United Bank Center this past weekend as the Lady Buffs ran their win streak to six games. The Fredericksburg native went 13-of-26 (50 percent) from the field including 15-of-20 (75 percent) at the free throw line to average a team-high 20.5 points per contest in the two wins to go along with 12 rebounds (five offensive, seven defensive), three assists, two steals and three blocks.
