SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State’s Kailyn Gilbreath claimed two individual awards, earning Lone Star Conference Player of the Year honors for the second straight year and Offensive Player of the Year for the second time, as the league announced its annual volleyball postseason awards on Wednesday evening at the LSC Championship banquet.
ASU, the 2021 LSC champions, had seven total honorees with Gilbreath and Baleigh Allen on the first team, and Chloe Patton and Grace White on the second. Sophia Berg, Delaney Fuller, and Elsa Lamphere were honorable mention selections.
In addition, the Rambelles Baleigh Allen was named Defensive Player of the Year, while Chuck Waddington was tabbed Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
Texas A&M-Commerce had five honorees. The Lions Celeste Vela picked up Setter of the Year and first-team honors.
West Texas A&M’s Chandler Vogel reigned as Libero of the Year for the fourth consecutive year in addition to earning a spot on the top team. Vogel is the first LSC volleyball student-athlete to win any individual award four straight years.
DBU’s Halee Van Poppel claimed Newcomer of the Year and first-team honors, while Eastern New Mexico’s Mikaela Garvin was named Freshman of the Year.
Six teams – ASU, Lubbock Christian, TAMUC, UT Permian Basin, UT Tyler, and WT - had two players on the All-LSC first team, while DBU, St. Mary's, and Texas A&M-Kingsville had one each. LCU’s Hannah Froeschl and Jalee Sims; StMU’s Alissa Tolbert; TAMUC’s Maddy Rashford; TAMUK’s Nicole Murff; UTPB’s Aquincia Strambler and Analise Lucio; UTT’s Mikayla Ware and Christina Escamilla; and WT’s Torrey Miller earned first team recognition.
The second annual All-Freshman Team included seven selections led by the Greyhounds Garvin.
A total of 52 student-athletes were recognized by the LSC postseason awards program. The all-conference honors were selected by the league’s head coaches.
