Three teams remain perfect on the season, with Angelo State and UT Tyler at 8-0, and Texas A&M-Kingsville 6-0.
The Spring 2021 volleyball slate will feature a “bubble” format for 16 teams with four divisions consisting of four teams each on Tuesday-Wednesday playing dates. Each team has 12 divisional games over six weeks against the same opponent at the same site. Regular season competition will begin on Jan. 26 and will conclude on March 10 with the week of March 15-20 reserved for make-up contests.
The LSC Volleyball Championship will include 12 teams with the top three in each division. The opening round is set for March 23, followed by the quarterfinals on March 24, semifinals on March 30 and championship match on March 31.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Mackenzie Catalina, Texas A&M International, JR, Accounting, OH, Cedar Park, Texas, Leander HS
Catalina was a driving force offensively with 5.63 kills per set in the Dustdevils two four-set wins over St. Mary's. On Tuesday, Catalina posted 19 kills with 9 digs in the 3-1 victory. Her best performance came on Wednesday when she posted a double-double including a career-best 26 kills and 16 digs to go with three blocks and an assist. For the week, Catalina put down 45 kills, hit .272 and totaled 47.5 points.
DEFENSIVE
Chandler Vogel, West Texas A&M, SR, Marketing, Libero, Hereford, Texas, Hereford HS
Vogel was a force in the back row for the Lady Buffs this week as they picked up a pair of Rivalry on the Range sweeps of Lubbock Christian during Lone Star Conference divisional action. The Hereford, Texas product registered 52 digs in the six sets for an average of 8.67 per frame to go along with six assists and three service aces. WT held the Lady Chaps to a team attack percentage of .054 in the pair of matches with 50 LCU attack errors while the Lady Buffs registered 128 digs and a reception percentage of .962. Vogel has now registered 2,009 career digs in Maroon & White to move just 77 digs shy of Lauren Britten (2013-16) for fourth place on WT's all-time list.

Emily Witt, Texas A&M-Kingsville, JR, Psychology, Setter, Rose Hill, Kan., Rose Hill HS
Witt set the table for a Javelina offense that hit .258 in a pair of victories and also collected her third and fourth double-doubles of the season. In a Tuesday night sweep of St. Edward's, Witt passed out 35 assists while TAMUK hit a season-best .310 as a team. She contributed to that number with five kills of her own and a .545 hitting percentage while also totaling 12 digs. On Wednesday, the Javs topped SEU in four sets thanks in part to a 37-assist, 12-dig night from Witt which also included five total blocks and four more kills. For the week, Witt averaged 10.29 assists per set and also hit .429 with just one error on 21 attacks.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Torrey Miller, West Texas A&M, led the way offensively for the Lady Buffs this past week as WT ran their win streak to four matches with a pair of LSC divisional sweeps of Lubbock Christian. The Brownwood product registered 25 kills on 66 swings with seven attack errors to hit .273 on the week to average 4.17 kills per frame with three assists, one service ace, 22 digs and six total blocks in the pair of wins. Miller registered a double-double in both matches against the Lady Chaps to run her career total to 17 double-doubles.
Julia Deais, St. Mary’s, On Tuesday, tied her career-high with 14 kills, hitting a season-best .435 and then she topped it with a career-best 18 kills on Wednesday, hitting .366. She also totaled a team-high six blocks in the first match of the week and had six digs in the second, despite not playing in the back row. Entering the week, Deais was averaging 1.78 kills per set with a .202 hitting percentage and she averaged 3.75 kills while hitting .391 in the two matches at Texas A&M International.
Christina Escamilla, UT Tyler, notched 13 kills in both wins for the Patriots this week against DBU and posted a .438 hitting percentage for the week. Escamilla had 26 total kills on 48 swings and recorded just five attacking errors between the two matches as she totaled 27.5 points for a Patriot offense that continued to roll to 8-0. Her 13 kills in Wednesday's match came in just three sets as UT Tyler swept DBU to remain perfect on the year.
Sophia Berg, Angelo State, had a phenomenal week against UT Permian Basin in two sweeps at home, scoring 28 points with 23 kills. Berg had 13 kills in the first match and 10 in the second, averaging 2.88 kills per set with a .281 hitting percentage. Berg registered one service ace as well as seven block total, one solo and six block assists, averaging .88 blocks per set. Berg also registered 11 digs for the Belles, averaging 1.38 digs per set against the Falcons.
Meghan Merlino, Texas A&M-Kingsville, contributed in just about every category as the Javelinas rolled to a pair of wins over St. Edward's. In a sweep on Tuesday, she rattled off eight kills, added two aces and tallied 19 digs. When the two teams met again on Wednesday, Merlino pocketed her second double-double of the year with 10 kills and 12 digs. Her line also included two more aces and four total blocks as TAMUK cruised to a four-set victory. Across seven sets, the Sacramento native hit .275 with only four errors on 51 attacks.
Chloe Patton, Angelo State, had a fantastic defensive series against UT Permian Basin, registering 65 digs for the Belles throughout eight sets played in the Stephens Arena. Patton averaged 8.13 digs per set while grabbing eight assists for the Belles, averaging 1 assist per set. She scored two points for the Belles offensively off of two service aces, averaging .25 service aces per set.
Savannah Guzman, UT Tyler, totaled 17 and 20 digs in the Patriot's wins over DBU this week to remain a perfect 8-0 on the season. Guzman averaged 5.29 digs per set and was instrumental in helping limit the DBU offense to just a .062 hitting percentage in the two matches. She also chipped in 11 assists between the two wins and has been a defensive catalyst for the no. 22 nationally-ranked Patriots all season long.
Nicole Murff, Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Javelinas limited St. Edward's to a .130 hitting percentage in two victories, thanks in large part to the efforts of Murff, who led her squad with 34 digs. Murff collected 14 of those on Tuesday to help TAMUK limit SEU to a .106 hitting percentage and score clean sweep. One day later, Murff accounted for a team-high 20 scoops and Javs limited their opponent to a .150 kill rate while taking the match in four sets. Murff's average of 4.86 digs per set was easily TAMUK's best in week in which the Javs pushed their record to 6-0.
Carly Unruh, Texas A&M International, was a force at the net for the Dustdevils in their two 3-1 wins over St. Mary's. On Tuesday, Uruh tied her career-high with seven blocks (four solo, three assists) to go with four digs, seven kills and an assist. On Wednesday, she posted six blocks (two solo, four assists) with four digs and five kills.
Hannah Holland, UAFS, continued her dominant season at the net, averaging 1.5 blocks per set in a pair of sweeps over Cameron. She totaled three assisted blocks in game one, and then four assisted blocks and two solo blocks in game two. She is currently second in the LSC at 1.26 blocks per set. Offensively, Holland added 11 kills on a .391 attack percentage. UAFS held Cameron to a .090 attack percentage over the two matches as UAFS continues to lead the league in opponent attack percentage at .094.
Sadie Snay, West Texas A&M, continued to guide the Lady Buff offense this past week as they picked up a pair of Lone Star Conference divisional sweeps over Lubbock Christian to run WT's win streak to four matches. The Kingman, Arizona product dished out 63 assists in the two matches for an incredible average of 10.50 per set to go along with eight kills on 40 swings with no attack errors to hit .400 on the week. Snay also tallied 13 digs to go along with three block assists for a total of 9.5 points. The junior paced the WT offense who hit .263 as a team with 85 kills for an average of 14.17 per frame.
McKenna Flagler, Texas A&M International, played a key role in the Dustdevils two 3-1 wins over St. Mary's. On Tuesday, Flager posted a double-double with a career-high 42 assists and 19 digs as well as three kills, three service aces and a block. On Wednesday, she logged another double-double with 39 assists and 11 digs to go along with two kills and a service ace.
Courtney Crownover, UAFS, continued to guide the offense against Cameron, averaging 8.5 assists per set. She once again nearly posted a triple double, recording 10 kills, 23 assists and eight digs in a sweep on Tuesday. in game two, she tallied six kills, 28 assists and eight digs as the Lady Lions earned their third straight sweep and their fifth straight win.
Lindsey Ledyard, Angelo State, continues to show her versatility for the Belles as she registered 59 assists against UT Permian Basin in their two home matches in the Stephens Arena. Averaging 7.38 assists per set, Ledyard was a huge asset on defense as well, registering 28 digs for Angelo State and helping to keep the Falcons at a .142 hitting percentage while averaging 3.5 digs per set. She scored two points for the Belles offensively, registering two kills and averaging .25 kills per set.
Callie Craus, UT Tyler, totaled 48 assists for the week in UT Tyler's wins over DBU to move to 8-0. She paired her 48 assists with 21 digs, including 13 digs in Wednesday's match to record a 21-assist, 13-dig double-double in the 3-0 sweep of DBU.
Jessica Souza, Oklahoma Christian, starred as OC rallied from down two sets and a match point to win 3-2 at Midwestern State on Tuesday. She had 28 assists to go with four kills, seven blocks and 11 digs in an all-around effort that helped fuel the Eagles' comeback in their first conference road win of the season. She added another solid performance in a 3-0 loss to the Mustangs on Wednesday with 18 assists, seven digs and two kills.
