DBU’s Melissa Jones was named the Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Academic Player of the Year as the conference released the women’s soccer academic awards on Tuesday.
Jones led a group of 11 standout student-athletes honored for their work in the classroom and on the pitch. The All-Academic team is chosen by the league’s sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for their entire collegiate career.
The DBU senior was joined on the team by fellow Patriots Delaney Schmidt and Kaci Parks, Angelo State’s Marissa Brezgiel, Lubbock Christian trio Allison Scott, Madison Mayben and Shadiana Haney, Texas A&M International’s Kimberly Garcia, Texas Woman’s Lexi D'Abrosca, UT Permian Basin’s Olivia Rees and West Texas A&M’s Ashley Silvestre.
Jones, a senior from Round Rock, claimed the league’s top academic award in women’s soccer with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average as a business marketing major at DBU. Jones started every game for the Patriots this season and registered a goal and two assists with over 1,000 minutes played in 14 matches from her defensive midfield position. She is the first player from DBU to earn Academic Player of the Year honors in women’s soccer.
