Spring 2021 women's soccer honors unveiled

Angelo State’s Avery McNeme and DBU’s Ashley Merrill earned Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year honors as the league announced its annual postseason awards on Tuesday.

The all-conference honors were selected by LSC head coaches with the number of all-conference team selections based on each team’s finish within the divisional standings. Individual awards were selected by division following a vote of the league's head coaches.

ASU, who claimed both a divisional title and the LSC title, was represented by McNeme, Cassidy Hill, Maddi Kyle, Cindy Rodriguez and Madison Stokes. McNeme, who also captured her third Midfielder of the Year honor, was joined on the special recognition list by Hill who claimed Defensive Player of the Year honors, Gabby Villagrand who earned Forward of the Year honors and Bianca Troost who was honored as Newcomer of the Year. Head coach Travis McCorkle was named Coach of the Year for the fifth time in the LSC.

DBU, which claimed a divisional title this season, received five selections to the all-conference team with Marit Auee, Blythe Obar, Kaci Parks and Delaney Schmidt joining Merrill. Merrill was deemed Midfielder of the Year in addition to earning Player of the Year honors. Obar was named Defensive Player of the Year and Auee was recognized as the Freshman of the Year. Head coach Michelle Lenard claimed her second consecutive Coach of the Year award.

Lubbock Christian, St. Edward’s and West Texas A&M collected four all-conference honorees each. WT’s Asha James and Hannah Kelley-Lusk both won individual awards earning Newcomer of the Year and Forward of the Year honors respectively. SEU’s Meghan Dunning secured Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

Texas A&M-Commerce’s Jen Peters also garnered Goalkeeper of the Year recognition, while UT Permian Basin’s Hayley Sawyer achieved Freshman of the Year acknowledgment.

The league also recognized 13 student-athletes on the inaugural All-Freshman team.

In total, 48 student-athletes were recognized for their accomplishments during the Spring 2021 season.
