LSC Men's Basketball Weekly Release - Week 10

Four Lone Star Conference men's basketball teams completed perfect weeks, including Angelo State, who earned a road victory over eighth-ranked West Texas A&M. Top-ranked Lubbock Christian, DBU and UAFS also went undefeated last week. LCU continued its unbeaten season and start to league play, as the Chaps remained atop the LSC standings at 5-0.
 
    LSC men’s basketball teams are 163-102 overall and 20-12 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the other conference in the South Central Region.

2022 LSC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The LSC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships are set for March 1-3-4-5-6, 2022, with the opening round on-campus on Tuesday, March 1. The final eight teams will advance to the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas, for the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship rounds March 3-6.  The top 12 men’s and women’s teams will qualify and be seeded based on the league standings following a single-round robin conference schedule (16 games).

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Tyrell Carroll, Angelo State, JR, Kinesiology, G, Omaha, Neb., Omaha North HS
Junior guard Tyrell Carroll led the Rams to two victories last week, including an 83-79 win over No. 8 West Texas A&M and an 89-83 win over Cameron. The Rams snapped a 12-game losing skid against the Buffs and Carroll tallied 17 points while shooting 54 percent (6-of-11) from the field. He followed that up with a 22-point performance in the win over Cameron on 6-of-9 shooting. Carroll hit 60 percent of his attempts during the week, including 9-of-16 attempts inside the arc, to total 39 points along with seven rebounds and four assists. The Nebraska native is now averaging 13.6 points per game this season for the Rams.

DEFENSIVE
Will Chayer, Texas A&M-Kingsville, JR, Mechanical Engineering, F, Corpus Christi, Texas, Veterans Memorial HS
Chayer helped lead a Javelina defense effort that produced two victories and limited three opponents to an average of 65.0 points per game during a 2-1 week for TAMUK. Chayer tallied eight points and three rebounds in a win over Texas A&M International. On Thursday, Chayer tallied 10 points and eight rebounds against UAFS, helping hold the Lions to just 40.4 percent shooting from the floor. He saved his best all-around performance for Saturday when he grabbed six rebounds, dished out nine assists, scored eight points and added a blocked shot, helping the Hogs defeat Oklahoma Christian, 74-67.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Evan Anderson, UAFS, averaged 19.0 points as UAFS earned a pair of road wins at Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International. He scored 18 points with five rebounds and two assists in the win over the Javelinas before totaling 20 points, four rebounds and five assists in an overtime win against the Dustdevils. He shot 15-for-17 from the free throw line in the two contests. He is currently fourth in the LSC in assists at 5.0 per game and third in assist/turnover ratio at 3.3.
 
    Aamer Muhammad, Lubbock Christian, turned in an all-around performance in LCU's lone game of the week, as the Chaps beat St. Edward's 87-60. He was the game's leading scorer with 26 points, shooting 64.2 percent from the field. He also grabbed five rebounds, tallied a team-high six assists, and set a new career-high with five steals, all in 36 minutes on the floor. Six of his points came from the free throw line, where he was perfect.
 
    Cameron Kahn, DBU, recorded his third straight 20-point game to lift DBU to a 79-69 win over Midwestern State. The sophomore registered a game-high 22 points and a career-high five assists for a Patriots squad that's now won five in a row. Kahn also notched season-high 9-of-10 free throws and shot 60 percent (6-of-10) or better for the third game in a row. The 6-foot-6 guard also impacted the defensive end of the floor, totaling a career-high four steals and a block.
 
    Yosnier Cobas, Eastern New Mexico, had a career-high 25 points in the Greyhounds game against St. Edward's on Saturday. He went 11-15 from the floor, 1-1 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 at the free throw line. Cobas also had five rebounds, one block, and one steal in the contest.
 
    Da'Zhon Wyche, UT Tyler, posted back-to-back season-high scoring numbers with 21 points against Texas A&M-Commerce and 28 points against Western New Mexico. Wyche went 14-for-30 (.467) from the field and knocked down six three-point makes to average 24.5 points between the two games for UT Tyler this week. Wyche was also efficient at the free throw line, going 15-for-17 for the week from the charity stripe.
 
    Nyk Madison, Oklahoma Christian, averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game as the Eagles split a pair of road games. In a 63-61 win at Texas A&M International (which was receiving votes in a national poll), he scored 16 points and added two blocked shots, one coming in the final minute as the Eagles fought to hold their lead. His inside presence helped limit the Dustdevils to 35.2-percent shooting, the second-worst performance of the season for TAMIU. He scored 21 points, just one off his career-high, and added three blocks in a 74-67 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
 
    C.J. Smith, Texas A&M-Kingsville, started the week by pouring in 24 points to go with five assists to help lead the Javelinas to a Monday evening victory at Texas A&M International. He followed that up with another 12 points on Thursday against Arkansas-Fort Smith, then put together a performance that included 15 points during a Saturday triumph over Oklahoma Christian. For the week, Smith, who continues to lead the Hogs in points and assists, averaged 17.0 points per game, handed out 10 assists, and swiped five steals to help his team earn a pair of victories.
 
    Addison Wallace, West Texas A&M, led the Buffs to an 85-55 victory over UT Permian Basin on Saturday as the redshirt-sophomore posted a game-high 17 points. Against the Falcons, Wallace was 7-for-10 from the floor, 2-for-2 at the free throw line with one 3-pointer while collecting three rebounds. He averaged 12.5 points a game on the weekend, shooting 56 percent from the field, 33 percent from the deep and 71 percent at the charity stripe for 25 total points with three assists and one steal.
 
    Alphonso Willis, Texas A&M-Commerce, averaged 12.5 points per game and three rebounds in the two games this past week. He had 13 points, two steals, two assists, and a rebound against UT Tyler on Tuesday and recorded 12 points, five rebounds, a block, and an assist at Western New Mexico on Thursday. He is 28th in the conference with a scoring average of 12.3 points.
 
    Dalin Williams, West Texas A&M, returned to action for the Buffs on Saturday, where he recorded just the second double-double for WT this season. The junior from Stinnett, Texas, posted 10 points while bringing down 11 rebounds for his first double-double in the Buffs 85-55 conference victory over UT Permian Basin.
 
    Jalen Brattain, Lubbock Christian, led the Lubbock Christian defense to yet another impressive defensive performance in their lone game of the week, as they beat St. Edward's 87-60. The Hilltoppers shot just 30 percent, which was tied for their lowest output of the season. Brattain pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the win, seven of which came on the defensive glass.
 
    Clashon Gaffney, Texas A&M-Commerce, had three blocks, a steal, and seven rebounds this past week, as he continues to lead the country in blocks. He had 13 points, six rebounds, and a block against UT Tyler on Tuesday and recorded two blocks and a steal at Western New Mexico on Thursday. The Lions are second in the country with 6.25 blocks per.
