ASU’s Ovcina headlines women’s tennis academic honors

Angelo State’s Ena Ovcina headlined a group of six student-athletes as the graduate student was named the Lone Star Conference Women’s Tennis Academic Player of the Year the league announced on Wednesday.

The All-Academic team is chosen by the league’s sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for their entire collegiate career.

Ovcina was joined on the all-academic team by DBU's Ira Vogelmann, St. Mary's trio Ashley Penshorn, Maria Garcia and Marina Vigil and Milou ter Morsche of Texas A&M-Kingsville. Penshorn earned her second consecutive LSC academic honor.

Ovcina, a native of Tidaholm, Sweden, is currently pursuing a master's of business administration at ASU and helped lead the Rambelles to a share of the LSC women's tennis championship. This season, the four-time all-conference selection was 6-6 from the No. 3 singles position and is one half of the 45th-ranked doubles team in NCAA Division II. Ovcina and Valentina Gonzalez are 11-3 as a pair in 2022.
