Women’s tennis postseason honors announced

Angelo State’s Dianela Rodriguez was named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year as the league announced its annual women’s tennis awards on Wednesday.

Rodriguez was one of 11 women to receive first-team accolades, including teammates Ena Ovcina and Valentina Gonzalez, Cameron’s Anastasia Uspenskaia, Vasilisa Polunova and Magda Wawrowska, Midwestern State’s Casie Curry, Anda Ghinga and Hannah Yip, St. Mary’s Ashley Penshorn and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Alessa Maier.

MSU’s Curry claimed the Senior of the Year award, while StMU junior Angela Vargas was accorded Newcomer of the Year recognition. CU’s Uspenskaia was distinguished as the Freshman of the Year and Aggies’ head coach Josh Cobble took home Coach of the Year honors for the first time in women’s tennis.

Ten players were also recognized on the LSC Sportsmanship Team, headlined by UAFS’ Chloe Ruppanner, who was honored as the Sportsmanship Player of the Year. The team was selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches, who nominated players from each LSC team that “exemplify outstanding sportsmanship, character, and ethical conduct, while displaying the true spirit of competition and college tennis.”

In total, 29 players collected all-conference recognition, with LSC co-champions ASU and CU earning a league-high eight selections each. StMU and MSU had seven honorees, followed by DBU with five and UT Tyler with four.
