#WorldBasketballDay The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming December 21 as WORLD BASKETBALL DAY to commemorate an important date in the history of the sport -- the date in 1891 in Springfield, Mass., that Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball. World Basketball Day showcases the role basketball plays in bringing people together and uniting communities around the world. The Lone Star Conference and its 17 member institutions join the basketball community throughout the world in celebrating World Basketball Day on Thursday.
Taking A Break. It's semester break week for Lone Star Conference teams who closed pre-break schedules with a handful of conference and non-conference games earlier in the week. The 2023 portion of the 2023-24 season resumes with a trio of pre-New Year's weekend games, including a December 30 conference and East Division match-up between a pair of LSC undefeated teams --Texas Woman's and UT Tyler. ... Conference action begins in earnest on January 4.

Junior guard Tina Machalova matched her season-high with 21 points in the UT Tyler 67-59 non-conference win over Southern Arkansas. Machalova scored 10 of those 21 points in the fourth quarter and buried a key three-pointer with 1:13 remaining to extend the Patriots' advantage to two possessions down the stretch. The Kosice, Slovakia, native finished the game 7-for-14 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc while also chipping in seven rebounds.
DEFENSIVE
Catalina Cortez, Midwestern State, G, So., Psychology, Lubbock, Texas (Cooper HS)
Catalina Cortez recorded a season-high five steals while helping Midwestern State to a 68-56 LSC West Division win over Cameron. The 5-2 sophomore guard from Lubbock played a key role in helping the Mustangs create a 27-13 edge in points off turnovers. Cortez also buried two of MSU's season-high 10 three-pointers while dishing out a career-high seven assists.
