West Texas A&M senior guard Julius Brown claimed Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year honors to headline the league’s postseason awards, it was announced Wednesday (March 1).
The awards were revealed at the annual championship banquet at Main Event in Frisco, Texas ahead of the LSC Basketball Championship, which is set to tip off Thursday at Comerica Center.
Brown, who was also a First Team selection and All-Defensive Team pick, averaged 16.8 points, 3.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game to lead the Buffs to a conference and West Division title. Brown, who shot 47.5 percent from the field, was the LSC Newcomer of the Year last season.
Angelo State graduate guard Steve Webb was named Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 49 steals. St. Edward’s forward Sean Elkinton earned Freshman of the Year honors after pulling down 8.4 rebounds per game. West Texas A&M also had the Newcomer of the Year in Damion Thornton (14.1 ppg), Sixth Man of the Year in Zach Toussaint (11.8 ppg) and Co-Coach of the Year in Tom Brown. Angelo State’s Vinay Patel shared the top coach honors after guiding a 23-5 regular season.
Overall, 44 student-athletes earned recognition. The awards are voted on by the league’s 16 head coaches.
