Scott, Deysel, Curtabbi, Spence claim LSC Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year awards

Ja’Qualon Scott, Devoux Deysel, Eleonora Curtabbi and Maricia Spence all claimed 2023 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors, which were announced Wednesday (June 7) by the league office.
 
Scott was named LSC Outdoor Track Male Athlete of the Year, Deysel was tabbed LSC Outdoor Field Male Athlete of the Year, Curtabbi won LSC Outdoor Track Female Athlete of the Year and Spence was voted LSC Outdoor Field Female Athlete of the Year.
 
Scott, who is a sophomore from Houston, Texas, was a silver medalist in both the 110-meter hurdles (13.42) and 400-meter hurdles (50.16) at the NCAA Division II National Championships. His time in the 400 was a school record. He was also part of the 4x400m relay team (3:09.19) at nationals and helped the Javelinas to a top-10 finish. Scott also won both hurdle events at the LSC Championships.
 
Deysel, who is a junior from Garsfontein, South Africa, won the national championship in the javelin with a NCAA Division II all-time record toss of 79.14 meters. Deysel, who also won the javelin crown in 2021, helped the Rams to an eighth-place team finish. He also claimed the LSC title in the javelin (73.95m).
 
Curtabbi, who is a senior from Turin, Italy, won the national championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the second consecutive year a NCAA Division II record time of 10:22.76. She also helped the Lady Buffs to a third-place finish at nationals. Curtabbi also won the LSC title in the steeplechase and 1,500 meters (4:36.44).
 
Spence, who is a junior from Christiana, Jamaica, was the runner-up in the heptathlon (personal-best 5,553) and seventh place in the long jump (6.11m) at nationals. She was also a member of the third-place 4x400 meter relay team (3:35.97). Spence was the high point athlete at the LSC Championships with 50 points, winning the heptathlon, long jump, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. She also swept the conference’s most outstanding track and most outstanding field athlete awards.
 
All four athletes earned First Team All-American recognition by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
 
The LSC honors were voted on by the league’s head coaches.
