DCTF's Hogue, Midwestern State's Stein claim LSC media awards

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Small College Writer Cory Hogue and Midwestern State Athletics broadcaster Pete Stein received the 2023 Lone Star Conference media awards, it was announced by league officials Thursday (July 27) at the league’s Football Media Day at McKinney ISD Stadium’s Community Event Center in McKinney, Texas.

Hogue earned the Kirk Hill Award as the most outstanding sportswriter of the year, while Stein captured the Jake Trussell Award as the league's top broadcaster.

The awards, which recognize those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by the league’s sports information directors. The Kirk Hill Award is named in honor of the late Kirk Hill of the Houston Post. Hill won the conference’s first sportswriter award in 1963. The Jake Trussell Award – presented since 1971 – is named in honor of the late Jake Trussell, who broadcasted contests for Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Hogue, who also won the Jake Trussell Award in 2020, puts a tremendous amount of effort into covering the LSC and all small college athletics in Texas. He places an emphasis on accuracy and focuses on promoting athletics as a whole. Hogue has built quality relationships around the LSC. He is a regular at the LSC Basketball Championship in Frisco, Texas, and covers numerous games in all sports throughout the year.

Stein has excelled since becoming the “Voice of the Mustangs” during the fall of 2014. He was hired as a full-time member of the MSU athletics communications staff in 2022 and has also flourished in that role. Stein takes preparation seriously and meets his goal of presenting every member of the league in a positive light on the LSC Digital Network.
