Only five playing dates remaining in the 2024 Lone Star Conference men’s soccer regular season – Oct. 23, Oct. 26, Oct. 30, Nov. 2 and Nov. 6.
St. Mary’s (9-2-2 overall, 5-0 LSC) has the standings lead with 15 points, followed by No. 22 Midwestern State (9-1-3, 4-1-1) with 13. Eastern New Mexico, St. Edward’s, DBU and Lubbock Christian all have eight points as 11 teams battle for the league’s six LSC Men’s Soccer Championship spots.
As far as statistical leaders, MSU has the top scoring average at 2.308 goals per match and STMU is allowing a league-low .62 goals per match. Individually, MSU’s Mere Escobar has the points lead with 30 (12 goals and six assists) – 13 more than anyone else. He also tied for the LSC lead in game-wining goals (three) with teammate Samuele Muroni. St. Mary’s Johnny Thurbin own the best goals-against average (.615) and has the most shutouts (six).
The LSC tournament is set for Nov. 9, 15 and 17. Quarterfinals will be on campus, while the semifinals and championship match will be at the site of the No. 1 seed.

Lubbock Christian freshman forward Justin Martinez had two goals and an assist over two matches, including a brace in the first 11 minutes of a 2-0 road win over Oklahoma Christian. Martinez recorded his assist on a late goal against Sul Ross State. Martinez, who had the most points in the LSC this week, ranks top five in the conference with 12 points on the season.
DEFENSIVE
Rodrigo Velasco, Eastern New Mexico, D/MF, Fr., Eastern New Mexico, Palma, Spain
Eastern New Mexico freshman defender/midfielder Rodrigo Velasco anchored back-to-back shutouts – for the first time since 2016 – against Oklahoma Christian and UT Tyler. Velasco also assisted the game-winning goal in the 1-0 match with OC. It was the Greyhounds’ first victory against the Eagles since 2018. Velasco played all 180 minutes over both matches, including a 0-0 draw with UT Tyler.
GOALKEEPER
Garrett McGee, DBU, GK, Fr., Kinesiology, Fort Worth, Texas
DBU freshman goalkeeper Garrett McGee made eight saves over two matches, including shutting out No. 22 Midwestern State. In the scoreless tie against the Mustangs, McGee made three saves highlighted by one with just over one minute to play. McGee surrendered just one penalty kick in DBU’s first victory against West Texas A&M in program history. McGee, who played all 180 minutes, has allowed just one goal over his last three matches.
