Midwestern State forward Mere Escobar claimed Lone Star Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season to highlight the league’s postseason awards, it was announced Thursday by LSC officials at the championship banquet.
Escobar, who is a senior from Austin, Texas, also took home the LSC Midfielder of the Year Award. He led the conference with 36 points (14 goals and eight assists) – 16 more than anyone else. Escobar also led the LSC with four game-winning goals and had one the league’s two hat tricks.
LSC champion St. Mary’s had the Defensive Player of the Year (junior Luke Mulkey), Goalkeeper of the Year (junior Johnny Thurbin) and Newcomer of the Year (senior midfielder Sofian Maghouz).
DBU senior Peyton Voelker was named LSC Forward of the Year, while Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper Pepe Hinterschuster took Freshman of the Year honors.
St. Edward’s Brian Young was named LSC Coach of the Year after guiding a third-place finish after the Hilltoppers finished last in 2023.
Escobar, Mulkey, Thurbin, Maghouz and Voekler were also All-Conference First Team selections. Hinterschuster was a second team pick and headlined 13 players on the All-Freshman Team.
Overall, 45 student-athletes were honored by the all-conference program, which also included a Third Team. The awards are voted on by the league’s head coaches.
