St. Edward's graduate student Arthur Souza was selected as the Lone Star Conference Men's Soccer Academic Player of the Year and leads the league's men's soccer academic awards as announced Thursday by league officials (Nov. 14) at the championship reception.
Souza, who is pursuing a master's degree in business administration, carries a 4.0 grade-point average. On the soccer field, Souza is a forward who finished the regular season ranked second among LSC goal scorers with eight including three recorded as game-winners. He netted two goals against both Northeastern State and Midwestern State and leads an SEU team that advanced to the LSC Tournament semifinals.
Joining Souza on the 11-member men's soccer All-Academic Team are Chase Turcotte and Peyton Voelker, DBU; Pablo Nodar, Eastern New Mexico; Saimon Gjeci and Connor Pettigrew, Lubbock Christian; Bradley Green and Johnny Thurbin, St. Mary's; Lewis Coates, Sul Ross State; Sid Cleofe, UT Tyler; and Matteo Landais, West Texas A&M.
DBU's Voelker is a three-time LSC All-Academic Team selection.
The All-Academic Team, selected by vote of the LSC sports information directors, recognizes student-athlete accomplishments in the classroom and on the soccer pitch. To be eligible for the All-Academic Team ballot, individuals must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Souza will be a candidate for the LSC Fred Jacoby Academic Athlete of the Year award which is announced in June.
