The 2024 Lone Star Conference baseball season is in full swing as all 13 league teams have played at least two, four-game league series.

UAFS is leading the early-season standings at 7-1 after series wins over Oklahoma Christian and St. Mary’s. West Texas A&M is the first LSC team to double digit wins (10-2).

Texas A&M International has won a league-high five consecutive games following a road series sweep against Cameron. Defending national champion Angelo State is the only league team unbeaten at home (4-0), while UAFS has not lost on the road (4-0).

Four players are batting at least .450 on the young season, and three are from UAFS: Nico Patrick .(481), Michael Brinton (.467) and Brandon Ulmer (.464). ASU’s Tripp Clark is at .452. Cameron catcher Wyatt Grant leads the LSC with six home runs.

WT’s Douglas Rojas and UT Tyler’s Miles Clack – both left-handers – and St. Edwards righty Ben Smedshammer have three wins on the mound. UTPB righty Brock Robarts leads the league with four saves.

Defending national champion Angelo State was also the top pick in the LSC preseason poll. ASU junior outfielder Jacob Guerrero and senior right-hander Braxton Pearson were named LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

St. Mary’s play-by-play announcer Rob Shadow has started a podcast called, “Baseball in the Lone Star.” The first two episodes are available on Spotify. To listen, click here.

Thursday (Feb. 22) is a special date as 293 active member institutions, 23 conferences and over 126,000 student-athletes within Division II celebrate DII Day. The day serves as an opportunity for all associated with NCAA Division II to celebrate the impact of athletics and student-athletes on their campuses and communities.

The LSC Baseball Championship will be compiled of the top eight teams based on conference standings. The top four seeds will host opening-round, best-of-three series on May 3-5 at their home parks. The winners will advance to a double elimination tournament on May 9-11 hosted by the top remaining seed.
