FRISCO, Texas – For six straight years, West Texas A&M has dominated the LSC Championship in Frisco. But that reign ended Friday night as the No. 8 seeded Cameron Aggies stunned the Buffs, 93-89 in overtime at Comerica Center.
The Aggies, paced by Daylon Andrews’ 31 points, nearly had the game won in regulation before West Texas rallied with late free throws to push the game in overtime. But in the extra session, the Aggies build a nine-point lead and then held on this time for the win, preventing a seventh-straight tournament title for West Texas A&M, the No. 1 seed and regular-season champs again this year. The Buffs had won 15 straight tournament games in Frisco, but will now await to see if they can hang on to the No. 1 seed in the region and host next week’s tournament in Canyon.
As for the Aggies, they made a strong push to be there as they currently sit 10th in the region. But they’ll have a chance to win an automatic berth if they can win two more games, starting Saturday in the semifinal round against either Angelo State or Eastern New Mexico.
Against WT, Cameron simply out-muscled the Buffs, especially down the stretch. Andre Washington had 15 points and nine rebounds and Jaylan Thomas scored 17 to go along with 11 rebounds.
On the flip side, LSC Player of the Year Larry Wise struggled from the floor, making just 3 of 14 shots for just 11 points. All five Buffs were in double figures, led by Kieran Elliott’s 25 points. Zach Toussaint had 17 points before fouling out in overtime. Ahamed Mohammed had 13 points.
In the second half, the Aggies grabbed lead early in the half and even pushed it up to eight with 9:19 to play. Down the stretch, they stayed in control, leading by five with 36 seconds left. But a layup by WT’s Elliott with 26 seconds left forced a foul. Andrews made just one of two for a 76-72 lead. The Buffs cut the lead in half with two Elliott free throws with nine seconds left. Andrew hit two free throws with six seconds left, seemingly put the game away. But the Buffs drew up a play to get Toussaint to the line with no time coming off the clock. He hit both shots and then a quick foul sent Lavell Brodnex to the line. He missed both shots and then an unexpected foul by Andrews put Toussaint back on the line with four seconds left. He made both shots to tie the game. Andrews had a running jumper before the buzzer that missed the rim and the game went to overtime.
Despite the momentum on WT’s side, it was the Aggies who scored the first nine points. The Buffs cut it down to three with 43 seconds left, but this time Andrews and his teammates made the free throws to secure the win.

Cameron Notes:
  • The Aggies became the first No. 8 seed to win a game on a neutral site. The LSC Championships went to the one-location format in 2008.
  • Cameron is now 5-16 all-time in LSC Championship. A win on Saturday would give the Aggies their first appearance in a tournament final in school history.
  • Andrews had a season-high 31 points. Against WT in two other meetings, he was held scoreless on the Jan. 6 loss in Lawton and then had 14 on Feb. 1 in Canyon.
  • The Aggies entered the game ranked last in the LSC in opposing 3-point percentage, allowing teams to make 39.1 percent beyond the arc. But on Friday, they held WT to just 7-of-28 shooting on 3-point attempts.

WTAMU Notes:
  • Since the tournament moved to Frisco in 2017, the Buffs had never lost a game, winning 18 straight games, including 15 at Comerica Center. They won three games in Canyon in 2021, but have cut down the nets six straight times.
  • Defensive Player of the Year Ryland Holt led the LSC in blocked shots with 42, but did not get a block Friday night and fouled out in regulation, playing only 24 minutes.
  • WTAMU still as 12 tournament titles in the LSC. The current schools in the conference have just 14 combined.
  • Before the loss, Toussaint was aiming to become the first player in LSC Championship history to make the all-tournament team four times.
  • With three more 3-point makes, Toussaint now has 366 for his career, the second-most in school history behind David Chavlovich, who has 388.
  • Since coach Tom Brown took over as head coach in 2015, the Buffs are now 18-2 against Cameron.
