FRISCO, Texas – For the first time in 31 years, Eastern New Mexico will be playing in the finals of the LSC Championship.
With seven dunks in the second half, the Greyhounds punched their ticket with a hard-fought 91-81 win over Cameron in the semifinal round Saturday at Comerica Center.
ENMU, the No. 4 seed of the tournament, withstood every challenge the eighth-seeded Aggies had to offer, but used a 13-3 run to pull away at the end. The Greyhounds will play No. 3 seed LCU on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a chance to win just their second tournament title in school history.
Four players scored in double-figures for ENMU, led by Jahcoree Ealy, who had 23 points, including three highlight-reel dunks in the second half. Mario Whitley added 18 points and seven rebounds, while Jose Murillo had 16 points and Greg Johnson scored 14 with seven boards.
Cameron, which knocked off No. 1 seed West Texas A&M on Thursday, will now wait to see if they’ll get an invite to next week’s regional tournament. The Aggies (18-12) were ranked 10
th last week before their upset over WT.
And although the Aggies trailed by nine at one point in the second half, they rallied to tie the score at 78 with 3:16 left on a driving layup by Jaylan Thomas.
But from there, Ealy answered with a bucket and then Lyron Bennett converted a 3-point play and the Greyhounds never looked back.
On the stat sheet, Cameron hit six more 3-pointers than ENMU and led in rebounding, blocks, assists and bench points. But where the Greyhounds more than held their own was in the paint as they outscored the Aggies 62-40 in the paint, led by the seven dunks, which all occurred in the second half.
