LSC Outdoor Track and Field Release - Week 8

Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship week is here! The annual event will be held Thursday-Saturday (May 9-11) at 1st Community Credit Union Field at LeGrand Stadium in San Angelo, Texas. It will be hosted by Angelo State.

All of the conference’s 11 men’s teams and 12 women’s squads will be competing: ASU, Cameron, DBU, Eastern New Mexico, Lubbock Christian, Midwestern State (women’s only), Oklahoma Christian, St. Edward’s, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT Tyler, West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico.

WT has swept the LSC men’s and women’s outdoor track and field conference titles the last three years.

LSC athletes have recorded 178 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks (79 men and 99 women). West Texas A&M’s Isaac Botsio (100 meters; 9.93) and William Amponsah (10,000 meters; 28:00.09) own top marks in all of NCAA Division II on the men’s side, while WT’s Florance Uwajeneza (10,000 meters; 32.52.54) and Angelo State’s Fatoumata Kabo (400 hurdles; 58.59) are tops in the country on the women’s side.

The NCAA Division II Championships will be held May 23-25 at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kan.

MEN’S TRACK
Ethan Anthony, Oklahoma Christian, Gr., MBA, Mornington, Australia
Anthony ran the ninth fastest 800-meter time NCAA Division II this year at the Arkansas Twilight in Fayetteville, Ark. The Oklahoma Christian graduate student’s personal-best and provisional time of 1:49.65 was behind only Division I competition.
 
MEN’S FIELD
Thomas Nieto, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Jr., Industrial Management & Applies Engineering Technology, Ibague, Colombia
Nieto reached new heights in the pole vault at the Tom Tellez Invitational in Houston, Texas. Nieto cleared a personal-best 18-0.5 (5.50m) on his first attempt en route to a gold medal. The provisional mark ranks second in all of NCAA Division II this year. Nieto, who wins the conference’s top weekly field athlete award for the second time this season, also tied the Texas A&M-Kingsville and national Columbia record.

WOMEN’S FIELD
Katryna Hernandez, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Sr., Skidmore, Texas (Skidmore-Tynan HS)
Hernandez claimed shot put gold at the Tom Tellez Invitational in Houston, Texas with a throw of 49-6.5 (15.10). The NCAA Division II provisional mark is her best of the outdoor season and ranks No. 12 in the nation. The Texas A&M-Kingsville senior has now won the conference’s top weekly field athlete award twice this season.
