Prepping for the LSC Schedule
All 16 Lone Star Conference volleyball teams make final preparations for the start of league play competing in LSC Challenge Weekend matches Thursday through Saturday (Sept. 19-21). Teams are spread over five campuses -- St. Mary's, Eastern New Mexico, Texas A&M International, Texas A&M-Kingsville, DBU – competing in non-conference count matches. … The LSC 2024 season schedule begins September 25.
 
Big Noise Made in Week 2
The LSC made noise in week two, posting seven wins vs. teams in the Sept. 9 AVCA Top 25 poll, including Ws against four among the Top 15. At the Colorado Premier Challenge, No. 9-ranked West Texas A&M took wins vs. #5 Concordia-St. Paul, #13 Chaminade and #24 Regis to win the Gold Bracket while Silver Bracket champion DBU snagged wins vs. #2 Wayne State, #17 Central Missouri and #23 Lewis. Angelo State upended Maverick Fall Classic host #15 Colorado Mesa to complete a 4-0 run at the tournament.
 
In addition to ASU, Texas A&M-Kingsville (4-0), UT Permian Basin (3-0) and UT Tyler (3-0) recorded undefeated weekend records. Five teams finished 3-1 weekends—Oklahoma Christian, St. Edward's, Texas Woman's, WT and DBU. … St. Mary's challenged #1-ranked Tampa, pushing the Spartans in the three-set 21-25, 23-25, 22-25 loss. … The opening set of DBU's 3-1 win over #23 Lewis lasted over an hour in a "chaotic bout of deuce play" resulting in a 41-39 score in the Patriots' favor.

OFFENSIVE
Shaylee Shore, DBU, MB, Sr., Health Sciences/Pre-Physical Therapy, Prosper, Texas
Senior Shaylee Shore posted a team-high .392 hitting percentage in leading DBU to three wins over nationally ranked opponents at the Colorado Premier Challenge. Shore totaled 39 kills and averaged 2.29 kills per set, adding 17 blocks and 5 service aces. In the five-set upset of No. 2 Wayne State, Shore totaled 12 kills, a .500 attack percentage and a team-high six blocks. Shore topped DBU with 16 kills and a .519 attack percentage in the victory over No. 23 Lewis in the Silver Bracket Championship.
 
DEFENSIVE
Bryli Contreras, West Texas A&M, Libero, Sr., Accounting, Canyon, Texas
Bryli Contreras led the way in the back row for West Texas A&M as it picked up the Colorado Premier Challenge title and wins over No. 24 Regis, No. 5 Concordia-St. Paul and No. 13 Chaminade. The senior libero registered 8 service aces and 95 digs (ave. 5.00) as the Lady Buffs held their tournament opponents to a .176 hit percentage. Contreras' play over the four matches earned her All-Tournament Team honors.
 
SETTER
Cali Nims, St. Mary's, S, Sr., Exercise & Sport Science, Corpus Christi, Texas
Setter Cali Nims averaged 10.53 assists and directed the St. Mary's offense to a .232 hitting percentage – including a season-best .325 in a win over East Central – during four matches at the Rattler Invitational. The senior, playing in a 5-1 offense for the first time in her career, averaged 1.27 kills with no hitting errors and hit .388 (19-0-49), averaging 2.20 digs and blasting six aces. She posted a career-best four blocks against Anderson. Nims posted the 32nd double-double of her career and third of the year with 41 assists and 12 digs vs. ECU. She was named to the Rattler Invitational All-Tournament team.
 
FRESHMAN
Sydney Thornton, Angelo State, MB, Fr., Business, Prosper, Texas
Sydney Thornton helped Angelo State to a 5-0 week in Colorado capped with a spot on the Maverick Fall Classic All-Tournament Team. The freshman began the week hitting .700 (7-0-10) against Western Colorado. Against Adams State, she had 10 kills, five blocks and hit .533 to open the Maverick Fall Classic, followed by eight kills against Cal State Dominguez Hills and a career-high 14 kills in the Belles' four-set win over #15 Colorado Mesa. Thornton tallied 13 blocks, 47 points and hit .458 over the five matches.
