Score Updates on LSC Scoreboard
Lone Star Conference women's basketball has the third weekend of a three-weekend stretch of in-Division games on the upcoming week's schedule (Jan. 16, 18) before spending January 23 and 25 playing cross-division opponents.
As Winter Storm Cora made her cold and snowy way across the LSC landscape, things were hot inside the gymnasiums and arenas. Seven players, led by Midwestern State's Zarria Carter, scored 22 or more points in games over weekend. Carter scored a combined 63 points in MSU wins vs. Western New Mexico (26 pts.) and Sul Ross State (37 pts.). Grace Foster tied her season-high with 30 points vs. WNMU while Meagan Mendazona scored 25 points in the UT Tyler win vs. St. Edward's. UT Permian Basin's Kyla Kane tallied 23 points vs. West Texas A&M while Texas Woman's got 22 points from a pair of players -- Ashley Ingram vs. St. Mary's and Scout Huffman vs. SEU. ... Other weekend bests included 17 rebounds by Ingram against St. Edward's; WNMU's Eliza Joynes with four blocks at Lubbock Christian; and MSU's Carisa Cortez – 10 assists – and Kerbie Cash – six steals – both coming against SRSU.
Six teams posted clean 2-0 weekend records with Angelo State and Texas Woman's each extending their respective season win streaks. ASU wins over West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico were its ninth and 10th consecutive victories. The Rambelles' last loss came Nov. 26 vs. Southern Nazarene. TWU recorded a pair of nine-point wins against St. Mary's and St. Edward's pushing its win streak to nine games. The Pioneers' only loss of the season came Nov. 23 at UT Tyler.
Standings as of January 11 and based on the overall LSC record – the games vs. all conference opponents – have four teams tied for the top spot, all with 8-1 (.889) marks: Angelo State, Lubbock Christian, Texas Woman's, and UT Tyler. UT Permian Basin is right behind at 7-2 (.778).
Seeding for the eight-team LSC Tournament is based on overall standings (22 games). The East and West Division winners automatically qualify for the LSC Tournament but are not guaranteed a top two seed.
For the second weekend in a row, Eastern New Mexico was involved in game decided on a last-second shot. On Saturday (Jan. 11) it was Angelo State sinking ENMU as Madeline Stephens connected on a jumper at the buzzer for a 61-59 Rambelles' win. A week earlier, it was ENMU's Ishauana Hunter nailing a buzzer-beater in the lane to hand Midwestern State a 56-54 loss (Jan. 5).
