Eastern New Mexico record breaker Stewart named D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week

After his record-breaking 382-yard rushing performance, Eastern New Mexico junior quarterback Jarius Stewart has been named D2Football.com’s National Offensive Player of the Week.

Stewart broke the all-time Lone Star Conference single-game rushing record and found the end zone five times to fuel the Greyhounds to a 59-35 home win over Western New Mexico in the “Chile Bowl” game. Stewart’s performance also helped ENMU tie the NCAA Division II all-time single-game rushing yardage total of 719 that has stood since 1970’s by Coe College (Iowa).

Stewart had 32 carries for an 11.9 yards-per-carry average as he broke the LSC mark of 342 yards set by Northeastern State’s Carlton Boothe in 1998.

Stewart had at least one TD in every quarter and three of them allowed ENMU to tie the game or take the lead. His TD runs went for 8, 71, 5, 68 and 55 yards. Five rushing TDs is the most in the league this season and 71 yards is the longest running play. Stewart, who also completed once pass for 38 yards, helped the Greyhounds snap a three-game skid.

Stewart becomes the fourth player from the LSC to earn D2Football.com national player of the week honors this season. UTPB junior linebacker Tristan Exline was named National Defensive Player of the Week after the first week of the year, while Central Washington sophomore kick returner Beau Phillips (Week 4) and Midwestern State freshman punt returner Cedonyae Lott (Week 6) earned the title of National Special Teams Player of the Week.
