The first week of Lone Star Conference men’s soccer league matches are in the books and four teams remain without a loss: Sul Ross State (4-2-2, 1-0 LSC), new league member UT Dallas (5-3-1, 1-0 LSC), Lubbock Christian (2-5-2, 1-0-1 LSC) and West Texas A&M (4-3-1, 1-0-1 LSC).
 
St. Edward’s (3-4-2, 1-1 LSC) opened up their conference slate with a 2-1 road win over No. 18 Midwestern State (5-2-3, 1-1 LSC).
 
SRSU and UTD have won two matches in a row.
 
LSC play continues this week with five matches on Wednesday (Oct. 8) and five more on Saturday (Oct. 11).
 
MSU is the favorite to win the LSC title this season, according the preseason poll. SEU’s Arthur Souza and St. Mary’s teammates Luke Mulkey and Johnny Thurbin were voted preseason players of the year.
 
The LSC men's soccer tournament will be comprised of the top six teams and is scheduled for Nov. 8 (quarterfinals), Nov. 12 (semifinals) and Nov. 15 (final). The quarterfinals will be held on campus of the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds; the semifinals are hosted by the No. 1 and No. 2 seed; and title match will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE MEN’S SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
Christian Mezas, St. Edward’s, F, So., Forensic Chemistry, Austin, Texas
St. Edward sophomore forward Christian Mezas kicked the game-winning goal with six seconds remaining to lift the Hilltoppers to a conference-opening 2-1 road win over No. 18 Midwestern State. Mezas also assisted on SEU’s equalizing goal in the 52nd minute. Mezas now has two game-winning goals this season to tie for the conference lead.
 
DEFENSIVE
Geoffroy Letienne, Lubbock Christian, D, Sr., Business Administration, Auxerre, France
Lubbock Christian senior defender Geoffroy Letienne helped fuel an unbeaten week, including a shutout of LSC defending champion St. Mary’s. Letienne, who played all 180 minutes over the two matches and leads the Chaps in minutes played this season, was crucial in two late stops to preserve a one-goal win over St. Edward’s. His play has helped the Chaps to three shutouts this season.
 
GOALKEEPER
Benjamin Aviles, Sul Ross State, GK, Sr., Business Administration, Vina del Mar, Chile
Sul Ross State senior goalkeeper Benjamin Avile had four saves and earned the shutout on the road against defending LSC champion St. Mary’s. Aviles increased his shutout streak to three straight matches – all on the road – and 309:59 total. He has 16 saves during that span.
