Two weeks of Lone Star Conference Baseball are in the books and five teams have winning records: Angelo State (6-2), St. Mary’s (6-2), UT Tyler (6-2), Eastern New Mexico (5-3) and St. Edward’s (5-3).

ASU and UT Tyler, who are both nationally-ranked and opened the season with four-game sweeps, split their series in Tyler, Texas. UT Tyler took the first two games, then ASU claimed the final two.

Nationally-ranked Lubbock Christian responded from an 0-4 start to the season with a sweep of its own, going on the road to take all four games from Sul Ross State.

The other series win from the weekend was Texas A&M-Kingsville, which took three games at Cameron. West Texas A&M won a pair of non-conference tilts.

On the young season, ASU leads the way in hitting (.387), pitching (3.41 ERA) and fielding (.972). LCU has hit a league-high 20 home runs, led by Brevin McCool’s conference-high seven. UT Tyler’s Drew Schmidt is hitting an LSC-best .615 (16-for-26). StMU’s Hagen Rose, ENMU’s Nick Mooney and Cole Lancaster, SEU’s Kobe Jaramillo and UT Tyler’s Kyle Froehlich are all 2-0 on the mound. SEU’s Parker Tennill has three saves to also lead the league.

CU senior third baseman Lance Barnett became the LSC’s first national weekly award winner of the season, earning the title of National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Hitter of the Week on Feb. 6. Barnett started his season with a bang, hitting .563 with three home runs, a triple, three doubles and 10 RBI. He also scored eight runs, walked four times and was hit by a pitch in a four-game series.

ASU was the top pick in the LSC preseason poll. ASU graduate student and outfielder Jacob Guerrero and UT Tyler senior right-hander Rawley Hector were named LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

The LSC Baseball Championship will feature a two-week tournament comprised of the top seven teams. The opening round is best-of-three series and will be held May 2-4 at the sites of the No. 2 (vs. No. 7), 3 (vs. 6) and 4 (vs. 5) seeds. The league’s top seed from the regular season will receive an opening-round bye and host the double-elimination championship round on May 8-10. The LSC Tournament Champion will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championship.
