February means crunch time for Lone Star Conference women's basketball. Four weeks remain in the regular season with teams continuing to battle not only for one of the eight LSC Tournament berths, but for a favorable seed in the bracket. ... Teams continue play within their respective East or West Division this week (Feb. 6, 8).

 

The turn of the calendar has three teams holding in first place in the LSC overall game standings: Texas Woman's, UT Tyler and Lubbock Christian. ... The two division-leading teams – UTT (East) and LCU (West) – carry identical 9-0 records. ... Seeding for the eight-team LSC Tournament is based on overall standings (22 games). The East and West Division winners automatically qualify for the LSC Tournament but are not guaranteed a top two seed.

 

Angelo State tied an LSC season-best with 30 assists against Sul Ross State (Jan. 30). Majik Esquivel was credited with 10 of the Rambelles' assists. ASU totaled 61 rebounds in its SRSU win, then came back for 24 steals vs. Western New Mexico (Feb. 1), including seven by Medeline Stephens. ... Midwestern State's Kerbie Cash sank 14-of-17 free throws and scored 29 points vs. Eastern New Mexico (Jan. 30). MSU sank 33 free throws as a team, the LSC single-game best. ...  Ashley Ingram pulled down 16 rebounds and handed out seven assists in her 24 minutes in the Texas Woman's win over Cameron (Feb. 1). ... UT Permian Basin's Taysha Rushton tallied four steals in the win vs. Western New Mexico (Jan. 30).

 

The LSC boasts a pair of 20-win teams – Texas Women's (21-1) and Lubbock Christian (20-3). UT Tyler is knocking at the door carrying a 19-2 record into the first full week of February. ... Six teams posted 2-0 marks for the Jan. 30-Feb. 1 weekend: ASU, LCU, Texas A&M-Kingsville, TWU, UT Permian Basin and UTT.
 

LSC in the Polls . . .

 

Preparations for the 2025 NCAA Division II Championship begin to take shape with the season's first region rankings scheduled for release February 19. The initial listing will be in alphabetical order with subsequent rankings in numerical order on February 26, March 5 and the final ranking with the March 9 announcement of the tournament bracket. ... Regionals are scheduled at eight campus sites with the winners advancing to Pittsburgh, Pa., for the Elite Eight and finals.

 

LSC teams used open November and December dates to take on South Central Region rivals from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in games that will ultimately figure into the Division II postseason regional rankings and tournament berths. In the 43 inter-region games, the LSC posted a 30-13 (.698) record with four teams unbeaten in games against their RMAC opponents: LCU (4-0), UT Tyler (3-0), Texas Woman's (3-0) and Eastern New Mexico (3-0).

OFFENSIVE

Kerbie Cash, Midwestern State, G, Fr., Early Childhood Education, Wylie, Texas

Guard Kerbie Cash averaged 25.5 points and eight rebounds to help Midwestern State to a Lone Star Conference split last week. The freshman poured in a career-high 29 points on 7-of-26 shooting while going 14-of-17 from the free thrown line in a tight 70-69 loss to Eastern New Mexico (Jan. 30). She added 11 rebounds to complete her eighth double-double of the season. Cash came back to score 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting with five rebounds in MSU's 69-67 win over West Texas A&M (Feb. 1) and finished the home set with four assists to keep the Mustangs in the mix for a LSC Tournament spot.

 

DEFENSIVE

Madeline Stephens, Angelo State, F, Gr., Health Science Professions, Lubbock, Texas

Defensive play of forward Madeline Stephens led Angelo State in its wins against Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico, keeping the Rambelles second in the West Division and among the leaders in the overall LSC standings. The graduate student keyed the defense with nine steals, including a career-high seven steals against WNMU, two blocked shots and 14 rebounds as ASU held the opponents to a combined 28 percent shooting. Stephens boosted the Rambelles' offense averaging 25 points behind 67 percent from the floor (12-for-18).
