Lubbock Christian senior infielder Brevin McCool claimed Lone Star Conference Baseball Player of the Year honors to highlight the league’s baseball postseason awards, which were announced by league officials on Wednesday (May 7) at the championship banquet in San Angelo, Texas.
McCool, who is from Hobbs, N.M, broke the Lone Star Conference single-season record with 30 home runs and is now the league’s all-time home run king with 60 career blasts. The right-handed hitter also entered the LSC record book with four home runs in a single game. He hit .416 in the regular season with 15 doubles, four triples and a league-leading 81 runs batted in. McCool also led the league in OPS (1.526) and slugging percentage (1.005). He scored 69 runs and was walked 44 times – 11 intentionally.
McCool’s teammate Ryan Markwardt was named LSC Pitcher of the Year after going 7-3 with a 3.31 ERA. The left-hander and Itasca, Texas native struck out 79 batters over 70 2/3 innings and led the league with three complete-games – two were shutouts.
UT Tyler senior outfielder Justin Williams, a native of Jackson, Miss., took Newcomer of the Year honors after hitting .411 with 12 home runs, three triples and 59 RBI.
Texas A&M-Kingsville right-handed pitcher Tyler Schumann (Fulshear, Texas) was voted LSC Freshman of the Year after going 5-3 with two saves and a 3.40 ERA.
Angelo State won the Coaching Staff of the Year award after guiding the Rams to a No. 1 national ranking and the LSC regular season championship. The Rams’ staff is comprised of head coach Kevin Brooks, assistant coach Adam Foster, assistant coach Sam Mote, graduate assistant Jackson Berry and volunteer assistant Ramsey Koschak.
Overall, 49 student-athletes were honored by the all-conference program. The awards are voted on by the league’s head coaches.
