With only one week remaining in the Lone Star Conference women’s basketball games regular season, No. 2 Texas Woman’s (24-1 overall) is alone in first place at 18-0. The Pioneers have won 23 straight games and are unbeaten on the road (13-0).
 
TWU can win its fourth straight LSC title with one more league win. The Pioneers host Texas A&M International (Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. CT) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (Feb. 28 at 1 pm. CT) this week in Denton, Texas.
 
No. 11 West Texas A&M (24-3, 16-2 LSC) is alone in second place, followed by UT Tyler (18-9, 14-4 LSC). No. 23 Lubbock Christian (21-6 overall), Eastern New Mexico (17-9 overall) and Angelo State (15-9 overall) are all tied for fourth place at 13-5. St. Mary’s (15-9 overall) and UT Permian Basin (15-11 overall) are both 10-8, while TAMIU (12-12 overall) is 9-9.
 
ASU has a 10-game winning streak. The Rambelles topped LCU 65-58 on Feb. 19. ENMU has won five games in a row, while WT has prevailed in three consecutive games. StMU won both its games last week.
 
Cameron’s Madison Griggs (18.5), ASU’s Majik Esquivel are (17.4) and TWU’s Averee Kleinhans (17.2) are in a tight race for the league scoring title. Midwestern State’s Kerbie Cash and TWU’s Gabby Elliott are close behind at 16.3 points per game.
 
TWU’s Gabby Elliott is in the only player in the league averaging double digit rebounds per game (11.3). LCU’s Kennedy Chappell has the assists lead at 3.4 per game. St. Mary’s Raynne Malik leads in blocks per game (2.3), while Sul Ross State’s Victoria Aguayo is tops in steals per game (4.2)
 
TWU was voted the favorite to win the LSC title this season, according the preseason poll. WT senior guard Kyla Kane was chosen as preseason player of the year.
 
The LSC women’s basketball tournament will feature the top eight teams and is set for March 6-8 at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Tickets are now on sale.
 
The LSC All-Conference and All-Academic awards will be announced live at the LSC Basketball Championships Banquet on Wednesday evening, March 4 in Frisco, Texas. They will also be posted on the conference website.
 
Due to being NCAA Division II provisional members, SRSU and new league member UT Dallas are not eligible for the LSC tournament but are able to win the LSC regular season title and postseason awards.

OFFENSIVE
Majik Esquivel, Angelo State, G, So., Commercial Aviation, Lubbock, Texas
Angelo State sophomore guard Majik Esquivel averaged 25 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists to fuel an unbeaten week against No. 23 Lubbock Christian and Midwestern State. Esquivel, who wins the league’s top weekly offensive award for the third time this season and second consecutive week, helped the Rambelles increase their winning streak to 10 games. She shot 53.5 percent from the floor, made all eight of her free-throw attempts and added a steal and a block. In the 65-58 win over LCU, she had a game-high 24 points. She had scored 20 points or more nine different times this season.
 
DEFENSIVE
Gabby Elliott, Texas Woman’s, F, Sr., Kinesiology, San Antonio, Texas
Texas Woman’s senior forward Gabby Elliott averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead a perfect week on the road against UT Tyler and UT Dallas. Elliott, who wins the league’s top weekly defensive award for the fourth time this season and second consecutive week, also had four blocks and two steals. She had a 19-point, 17-board double double in a 51-36 game against UT Tyler. Elliott and company held the Patriots to 11 points in the first half and on the week, allowed just 24.7 percent shooting. She now has three games this season with 17 rebounds. Her play helped No. 2 TWU increase its winning streak to 23 games and stay unbeaten on the road (13-0).
