Texas Woman’s senior forward Gabby Elliott claimed Lone Star Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year honors to headline the league’s postseason awards, which were announced Wednesday (March 4).
The awards were revealed at the annual championship banquet at Main Event in Frisco, Texas ahead of the LSC Basketball Championship, which is set to tip off Thursday at Comerica Center.
Elliott, who is 6-foot-2 and a native of San Antonio, Texas, also earned the title of LSC Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged 16.6 points on 54.1 percent shooting, a league-high 11.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. Elliott had 15 double doubles and also led the conference with 187 defensive boards. She led the Pioneers to an LSC regular season title with a 20-0 record and No. 1 national ranking.
Lubbock Christian guard Meg Meekins was voted LSC Freshman of the Year after averaging 12.6 points and 2.4 assists per game, while Eastern New Mexico senior forward Chloe Dallas was named LSC Newcomer of the Year with 14.3 points and 7.5 boards per game. UT Tyler senior guard Mariah Neal (7.3 points and 2.1 steals per game) earned the title of LSC Sixth Woman of the Year.
Elliott and Dallas were also LSC First Team All-Conference selections, while Meekins was a Second Team pick. Elliott also landed on the All-Defensive Team and Meekins appeared on the All-Freshman Team.
TWU’s Beth Jillson was voted LSC Noel Johnson Coach of the Year after guiding a fourth consecutive LSC regular season title and entering the postseason on a 25-game winning streak.
Overall, 49 student-athletes earned recognition. The awards are voted on by the league’s 17 head coaches.
