DBU junior Ella Cheek was named Lone Star Conference Women’s Golf Player of the Year to lead the league’s annual postseason women’s golf awards announced by league officials on Sunday (April 12) at the championship banquet at Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club in Rockwall, Texas.
Cheek, who is from Sachse, Texas, leads the league with an adjusted scoring average of 70.8 and three tournament wins this season. She won the MSU Invitational (8-under-par), Rattler Invitational (14-under) and Lynn Invite at Boca Woods (3-over). Cheek has finished in the top 10 of all 10 events she has played this year and is the No. 2-ranked golfer in all of NCAA Division II. Cheek was the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2024.
Cheek topped the eight-golfer first team that includes teammates Gracie Grant and Madison Ude; Taylor Wilczek of St. Mary’s; Martha Laremark, Lucy Kate Smith and Arnie Taguines of UT Tyler; and Sarah Reed of West Texas A&M.
St. Mary’s sophomore Brielle Burns was voted Newcomer of the Year after logging an adjusted scoring average of 74.4 with six top 25 finishes. She was a second team all-LSC selection.
Smith took Freshman of the Year honors after compiling a 74 adjusted scoring average with two tournament victories: The Southern Invite (2-over) and Emarald Coast Collegiate (1-under). Her play helped the Patriots win both events.
DBU’s Kenny Trapp was named LSC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year and sixth time overall after guiding the Patriots to seven team victories and a No. 2 national ranking.
In total, 19 players earned recognition. The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
