The Lone Star Conference football season is officially underway as nine of the league’s 10 teams played during Week 0.
 
No. 22 Western Oregon, Western New Mexico and Midwestern State all began their 2026 slate with victories. Only No. 7 Central Washington was idle. To read the recaps, click here.
 
Week 1 will feature nine teams in action with three games Thursday (Sept. 3) and six on Saturday (Sept. 5). Only No. 18 UT Permian Basin is idle.
 
CWU was picked as the favorite to win the LSC title this season, according to the league’s preseason poll. WOU senior quarterback Jordan McCarty and CWU senior linebacker Brycen Indell were predicted to win preseason player of the year honors.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
Joshua Gaines, Western New Mexico, RB, Fr., Business Management, Chandler, Ariz.
Western New Mexico freshman running back Joshua Gaines scored five touchdowns – four rushing and one receiving – to lead the Mustangs’ to a season-opening 62-45 road win over Adams State. Gaines’ 30 points scored is the most by a running back in the LSC since 2008 and the most by any player in all of NCAA Division II in Week 0. His four rushing TDs tied a WNMU single-game record. Gaines had a rushing TD in all four quarters. He totaled 66 yards on the ground and his receiving TD was from 15 yards out in the first quarter.
 
DEFENSIVE
Malik Ross, Western Oregon, S, Sr., Exercise Science, Tualatin, Ore.
Western Oregon senior safety Malik Ross had eight tackles – five solo – and an interception in the end zone to help lead the No. 22-ranked Wolves to a 22-20 road win over Colorado School of Mines. Ross’ pick came in the final minute of the third quarter as Mines was looking to add to a 17-16 lead. The Wolves scored the go-ahead TD on the ensuing drive. Ross also had a pass break-up and WOU held Mines to just 273 yards of total offense.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Kyree Payton, Sul Ross State, KR, Sr., Criminal Justice, Buda, Texas
Sul Ross State senior Kyree Payton took back a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown during the Lobos’ season opener at home against Wayland Baptist. Payton’s score came with 10:31 left to play and brought the Lobos to within 28-12. On his next kickoff return, Payton totaled 23 yards to set up a Lobos touchdown. Payton was the only player in the LSC to have a TD return in Week 0.
