No. 14 Central Washington, UT Permian Basin, Midwestern State, Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville were all victorious in Week 4 of Lone Star Conference football. All but CWU won on the road. UTPB is now 3-0 in league play. CWU, MSU and TAMUK are also unbeaten at 2-0. ASU improved to 1-1. To read the recaps, click here.
 
Week 5 will feature four conference games (Western Oregon at MSU, CWU at ASU, West Texas A&M at TAMUK and Eastern New Mexico at SRSU). UTPB has a non-conference road matchup against Northeastern State. WNMU is idle.
 
MSU is tops in the league in total offense (576.3 yards per game), while ASU is tops in defense (356.5 yards per game). UTPB is scoring a conference-best 47.8 points per game and allowing a league-low 18.8 points per game. CWU (48.5 yards per game) is the least penalized team in the LSC.
 
CWU was picked to repeat as the LSC champion this season, according to the league’s preseason poll. WOU senior quarterback Jordan McCarty and CWU senior linebacker Brycen Indell were predicted to win preseason player of the year honors.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

CO-OFFENSIVE
Kaden Brown, Midwestern State, QB, Jr., Applied Arts & Science, Midlothian, Texas
Midwestern State junior quarterback Kaden Brown set program records with 474 passing yards and 506 yards of total offense in a 41-31 conference road win over West Texas A&M. It was the Mustangs’ first victory over WT since 2018 and first in in Canyon since 2012. Brown finished 29-for-43 passing for three touchdowns without an interception. He added 32 yards and a TD on 12 carries. Brown also secured a two-point conversion on the ground. With the score 27-24 entering the fourth quarter, Brown had TDs in the air and on the ground to secure the win. His passing yardage and total offense numbers are the most in NCAA Division II this season and highest in the LSC since 2017. Brown leads the nation in total offense per game (377.3).
 
Christian Kretz, Texas A&M-Kingsville, WR, Sr., Sociology, Temecula, Calif.
Texas A&M-Kingsville senior wide receiver Christian Kretz set program records with 270 yards and 16 receptions in a 52-14 conference road win over Western New Mexico. Kretz’s yardage is the most in NCAA Division II this season and ranks fourth all-time in the LSC. His receptions are the second most in Division II this year and are tied for second most in league history. Kretz’s TDs came all in a row – from Mills Dawson – over the second and third quarters to help the Javelinas extend their lead to 29-7. Kretz’s longest TD went for 75 yards and his other two were each for 20-plus yards. He had at least five catches in each of the first three quarters and was in for only one drive in the fourth quarter. Kretz is tied for the LSC lead this season with four TDs.
 
DEFENSIVE
Eli Leiataua, UT Permian Basin, LB, Jr., Marketing, Hinesville, Ga.
UT Permian Basin junior linebacker Eli Leiataua had 11 tackles – six solo – and 1.5 sacks to help fuel a 56-10 road win over Eastern New Mexico that improved the Falcons to 3-0 in league play. Leiataua’s sacks totaled a loss of eight yards and he also added a quarterback hurry. Leiataua and company limited the Greyhounds to just 67 rushing yards and shut them out in the second half.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Isaiah Orlandi, West Texas A&M, KR, Fr., Business Management
West Texas A&M freshman kick returner Isaiah Orlandi took back a fourth-quarter kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown during the Buffs’ game against Midwestern State. Orlandi’s kickoff return – just the third in the league this season – brought the Buffs to withing 41-31 with 6:09 to play. He finished with 122 yards on three kickoffs. The yardage is tops for a single game in the conference this year.
