Golf academic awards announced

West Texas A&M’s Ethan Peterson and Texas A&M-Commerce’s Marcus Sanna shared Academic Player of the Year acclaim on the men’s side, while Tarleton State’s Sharon Lau claimed the women’s top award as the Lone Star Conference golf academic awards were announced by league officials Sunday night at the championship awards banquet.

Peterson and Sanna were joined by Cameron’s Felipe Anzarut and A&M-C’s Kason Childress on the men’s team.

An accounting major from Clovis, N.M., Peterson ended the season with a second-place finish at the Wolf Pack Invitational with a 68 and 67, which were the low rounds of the season for him.

A general business major from Sherman, Texas, posted a pair of top-10 finishes with a low round of 68 this year.

With Lau on the women’s team were WT’s Judy Papenfus and Vanessa Spradlin, and Angelo State’s Courtney Rutledge and Ashley Bartholomew.

An engineering major from Malaysia, Lau has one individual title and a pair of top-10 finishes in 2013-14.  The senior is a three-time All-Academic honoree and was named the 2012 LSC Academic Player of the Year.

Sanna, Lau, Rutledge and Spradlin were repeat selections on the All-Academic Team.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting based on both academic and athletic achievement.
