WT, TSU capture LSC Cross Country titles

West Texas A&M won its third straight men's title and Tarleton State captured its first women's crown at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships held Monday at Tejas Golf Course in Stephenville, Texas.

        The Buffs placed five runners in the top eight for a team total of 22 points led by the individual medalist Geoffrey Kipchumba, who covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:03.00.

        WT’s Blake Whalen was named Newcomer of the Year for his second place finish in 25:09.90 with Jamie Taylor-Caldwell in fourth (25:37.90). Tyson Wieland held on for seventh place (26:01.20), while Zach Daniel continued to move up through the race to finish eighth (26:10.70).
          TSU finished second with 42 points, while Texas A&M-Commerce was third (95) and Angelo State fourth (116).
 
        Angelo State’s Devitt Smetana earned Freshman of the Year honors.
 
        On the women’s side, TSU edged Eastern New Mexico by one point, 70-71, to claim its first championship.  The TexAnns Aly Coughlin finished the 6,000-meter course in 21:58.20 to earn individual medalist honors.
 
        TSU’s Katelin Huckabee (22:59.90) came in third, Haley Dennard (23:57.00) finished in 18th and Tylo Farrar (24:01.70) was right behind in 19th. Audrey Shelton (25:09.10) placed 29th and Ande Carlton rounded out the Tarleton runners in 44th with a time of 27:09.00.
 
        A&M-C was third with 79 points just in front of Midwestern State (80).
 
        MSU’s Leticia Shaban was named Newcomer of the Year, while the Mustangs Sara Smith garnered Freshman of the Year acclaim.
 
        The top 15 finishers in each race earned All-LSC runner honors.
 
        Up next is the NCAA Division II South Central Regional meet Saturday, Nov. 7 at The Range in Canyon, Texas.
