LCU, WT claim 2019 cross country titles

Lubbock Christian won its first women’s cross country championship in the Lone Star Conference and West Texas A&M claimed its seventh straight men’s cross country title at the 2019 LSC Cross Country Championships held Saturday at University Golf Course at Scott Park in Silver City, N.M.

LCU’s Amira McKee took home individual medalist honors for the Lady Chaps after finishing the 6-kilometer race in 22:29.12 nearly 20 seconds faster than the next finisher. LCU placed three runners inside of the top 10 including freshman Caroline Jerotich (5th) and Poro Gahekave (10th). Jenna Rosales (23rd) and Marissa Perez (25th) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Chaps. LCU finished the race with a team score of 64.
 
West Texas A&M finished second with top finisher and Freshman of the Year Daphne Pate pacing the Lady Buffs with a time of 22:54.07 in third place. Kelly McCaskill and Mallory Shehan finished in 12th and 13th to earn all-conference honors. The Lady Buffs finished with a team score of 85.
 
Eastern New Mexico finished in third with a team score of 90. The Greyhounds were led by a sixth-place finish from Aminata Kenyawani who also earned Newcomer of the Year honors. Evaline Cheptoo finished in ninth place for ENMU to earn all-conference honors.
 
DBU finished in fourth with a score of 118 and Tarleton State rounded out the top five with a team score of 160.
 
WT earned its seventh LSC men’s cross country title with a team score of 39. The Buffs were paced by 2019 LSC Individual Medalist and LSC Newcomer of the Year Ezekiel Kipchirchir who finished the 8-kilometer race with a time of 24:56.00. Three other WT runners finished inside the top 10 including Daniel Haymes (6th), Emmanuel Too (7th) and Ahmed Omer (10th). Butare Rugenerwa rounded out the scoring for WT finishing in 15th.
 
Lubbock Christian finished in second place in its first LSC meet with a team score of 86. The Chaps were led by third place finisher Kenyon Abdi who crossed the line in 25:27.40. Patrick Chemoimet finished just behind Abdi in fourth to claim freshman of the year honors and Brian Kipchumba finished in eighth as the last LCU finisher inside the top 10.
 
Cameron rounded out the top three team scores finishing with a total of 97 points. The Aggies were headlined by last year’s individual medalist James Majenge who crossed the line in second place with a time of 25:22.20.
 
Oklahoma Christian finished its first LSC championship meet in fourth with a team score of 104 followed by Western New Mexico in fifth with a team score of 137.
 
The top 15 finishers for both the men and women earned LSC All-Conference honors.
 
LSC teams will next compete at the NCAA DII South Central Regional meet Saturday, November 9 at The Range in Canyon, Texas.
