Golf academic awards announced

Cameron’s Dario Gabriel and West Texas A&M’s Jelina Fernando were named Men’s and Women’s Academic Player of the Year, respectively, to top the Lone Star Conference golf academic awards announced by league officials Sunday evening at the championship banquet.

Gabriel earned top academic honors for the third consecutive year and was joined by Aggie teammate Devin Whipple; WT’s Brayden Cruth; Texas A&M-Commerce’s Blake Hartford; and Western New Mexico’s Harry O'Callaghan. Gabriel was named to the team for the third time, while Cruth was a repeat selection.

On the women’s side, Fernando headlined the team along with CU’s Allison Duffin; WNMU’s Brenda Dominguez and Shelby Turner; and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Kristina Gutierrez.  Fernando, Duffin, and Dominguez were recognized for the second straight year.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting based on both academic and athletic achievement.
