Golf academic awards released

Lubbock Christian’s Zach Burkholder and West Texas A&M’s Jelina Fernando were named Men’s and Women’s Academic Player of the Year, respectively, to lead the Lone Star Conference golf academic awards announced by league officials Tuesday.

Fernando earned top academic honors for the second consecutive year and was joined by Angelo State’s Joselyn Jackson, Cameron’s Allison Duffin, DBU’s Hanna Harrison, and Oklahoma Christian Felicity Wittenberg.  Fernando and Duffin were recognized for the third consecutive year.

On the men’s side, Burkholder headlined the team along with CU’s Devin Whipple, OC’s Andres Brictson, Texas A&M International’s Justin Kim, and WT’s Eemeli Jarvinen.  Whipple was a repeat selection.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting based on both academic and athletic achievement.
