Eastern New Mexico’s Kayla Sisneros and Western New Mexico’s Michael Anzures were named the 2021 Lone Star Conference Cross Country Academic Runners of the Year as the league announced the all-academic honors on Monday.
Sisneros and Anzures were among 10 runners recognized for their work on the course and in the classroom as members of the 2021 LSC All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The All-Academic teams are voted on by the league’s sports information directors.
Sisneros, a senior from Roswell, N.M., was named the 2021 LSC Women’s Academic Runner of the Year and posted a 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a physical education and health major at ENMU. She earned a season-high ninth-place finish at the DII Preview Meet in Lubbock, Texas, on October 9. Sisneros finished in 51st at the 2021 LSC Cross Country Championships with a time of 24:48.47 as the Greyhounds claimed fourth place at the meet.
Sisneros was joined on the women’s team by DBU’s Rylee Cristan, Lubbock Christian’s Marissa Perez, UT Tyler’s Natasha Carcano and Western New Mexico’s Sophia Rodriguez. This was Cristan's third all-academic selection.
Anzures, a senior from Seboyeta, N.M., garnered LSC Men's Academic Runner of the Year honors after accumulating a 3.98 cumulative grade point average as a secondary education major. He placed 25th on Saturday at the LSC championships posting a time of 26:52.80. Anzures has earned all-academic recognition for a fourth-straight year.
Anzures led the men's all-academic team, which includes the Oklahoma Christian duo of Jelte van Atten and Colten Brown, Texas A&M-Commerce's Tanner Townsend and West Texas A&M's Briggs Wittlake. Townsend and Wittlake were repeat all-academic selections.
