LUBBOCK, Texas -- DBU’s women’s cross country team and West Texas A&M’s men’s team registered sixth-place finishes at Saturday's 2021 Division II South Central Region Championships in Lubbock, Texas. WT’s Florance Uwajeneza was the top finisher from the Lone Star Conference in the women’s race, and UT Permian Basin’s Erik Flores was the fastest league man across the line.
Uwajeneza led three LSC runners who earned all-region honors with Top 25 finishes. The 2021 conference champion finished in third with a 6-kilometer time of 20:34.40. Fellow Lady Buff, and LSC Newcomer of the Year, Eleonora Curtabbi, was sixth in 20:56.20, and DBU's Madison Brown crossed the line in 21:05.00 to finish 12th.
DBU ended the day in sixth place to lead all LSC teams, scoring 187 points to finish 15 points ahead of WT in seventh with 202 points. Texas A&M International finished third among league teams in 12 th place, followed by Eastern New Mexico in 13th and Lubbock Christian in 15th.
On the men’s side, Flores’ 10-kilometer time of 31:03.00 was good enough for 21st place and all-region honors. WT’s Ezekiel Kipchirchir, the 2019 South Central Champion, finished just inside the Top 25 in 24th place 31:05.40. 2021 LSC individual champion Innocent Murwanashyaka ended the race in 27th with a time of 31:14.58.
WT scored 177 points to finish sixth in team scoring. UT Tyler finished in 14th, followed by DBU in 15th to round out the top three LSC teams.
Teams and individuals will await the selection of the at-large championship field for the NCAA Division II National Championships. Selections will be announced on Monday, November 8, on NCAA.com.
