LSC Cross Country Runners of the Week
MEN’S
Innocent Murwanashyaka, West Texas A&M, JR, Criminal Justice, St. Paul, Minn., Como Park Senior HS
Murwanashyaka finished second en route to leading the Buffs to the team title at the Texas Tech Open, defeating a pair of Division I schools. The junior recorded the second runner-up finish of his career covering the 4-mile course in 19 minutes, 49 seconds.
 
WOMEN’S
Florance Uwajeneza, West Texas A&M, JR, Nursing, St. Paul, Minn., Como Park Senior HS
Uwajeneza remained undefeated on the cross country course as a Lady Buff picking up her fourth career victory at the Texas Tech Open. The junior from St. Paul, Minn. covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 26.6 seconds to finish nearly 30 seconds ahead of teammate Eleonora Curtabbi. The Lady Buffs also won the team title over hosts TTU and UTEP.
 
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
MEN’S
Gustavo Posada, West Texas A&M, FR, Mechanical Engineering, Houston, Texas, Klein HS
In his first collegiate race, Posada finished fifth at the Texas Tech Open, helping the Buffs take down hosts TTU and UTEP. The Houston native was one of five runners to run under 20 minutes for the 4-mile course finishing in 19 minutes, 56 seconds.
 
WOMEN’S
Marta Pascoa, Eastern New Mexico, FR, Business, Setubal, Portugal, Nivel Secondary
Pascoa placed eighth at the Texas Tech Open with a time of 19:10.15 on the 5-kilometer course. Pascoa was the fastest freshman at the Texas Tech Open and placed fifth among other LSC runners in her first race for the Greyhounds.

SELECTED NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Matthew Hahn, DBU, earned his first career victory and helped lift the Patriots to a win at the Orville Rogers XC Opener on Saturday.  Hahn clocked a personal record time of 25:29.2 and averaged a time of 5:07.6 per mile in the 8K event to pace a field of 74 runners.
 
    Saulo Yoel, Cameron, led the Aggie men to a second-place finish at the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational in their first race of the fall. The senior finished second himself in the four-mile race with a time of 5:17.42, just a few seconds behind the top finisher.
 
    Kelvin Kipkemboi, Eastern New Mexico, placed 10th at the Texas Tech Open, with a time of 20:17.4. He finished 5th among LSC runners in his first cross country meet for the Greyhounds.
 
    Carlos Hernandez, UAFS, won the Early Bird Opener with a 5k time of 16:13.3 with a mile split of 5:13.3. He led UAFS to a team win in the event, leading seven runners inside the top 10.
 
    Cody Fountain, Texas A&M-Kingsville, was the top individual finisher for the Javelina men's team at the 2021 DBU Orville Rodgers XC Opener, completing the 8k at Lynn Creek Park in 27:25.0 and placing 24th, with an average mile time of 5:30.9 in his collegiate debut.
 
    Angel Contreras, UT Tyler, recorded his second straight top-ten finish dating back to 2020 at the DBU Orville Rogers XC Opener, placing sixth individually in the 2021 edition of the race. Contreras posted a time of 26:02.1 in the 8K race, leading UT Tyler to a third-place team finish for the event.
 
    Hector Sanchez, UT Permian Basin, started his collegiate career hot at the Texas Tech Open. He ran a 20:02.70 to finish the race seventh overall in the event.
 
    Brian Easter, Cameron, had a solid showing in his debut collegiate race, the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational. The Mansfield, Texas native came in with a time of 22:43.32 in the four-mile race, placing 21st individually and aiding the Aggies in taking second place as a team.
 
    Nigusom Knight, St. Edward’s, was the top finisher for the Hilltoppers and eighth overall in his first collegiate race. He finished in 26:05.0, just 34.2 seconds behind the winner, at the 8K DBU Orville Rogers Open, averaging 5:14.9 per mile.
 
    Cody Fountain, Texas A&M-Kingsville, was the top individual finisher for the Javelina men's team at the 2021 DBU Orville Rodgers XC Opener, completing the 8k at Lynn Creek Park in 27:25.0 and placing 24th, with an average mile time of 5:30.9 in his collegiate debut.
 
    Marissa Insinna, DBU, helped lead the 24th ranked Lady Patriots to a win at the Orville Rogers XC Opener with a second-place individual finish. Insinna posted a time of 18:25.9 in the 5K event and averaged 5:55.9 per mile in a field that consisted of 70 competitors.
 
    Neri Getraide, Eastern New Mexico, ran a personal best 18:36.6 on the 5-kilometer course at the Texas Tech Open on Saturday. Getraide's time placed her fifth overall and ranked third among LSC runners.
 
    Faith Brothers, St. Edward’s, brought home third place at the 5k DBU Orville Rogers Opener, finishing in a time of 18:31.4, just 11.5 seconds behind the top finisher, with an average mile of 5:57.3.
 
    Kandace Young, UAFS, returned to the UAFS lineup after sitting out 2020 to lead the Lady Lions to a win at the Early Bird Opener. Young earned medalist honors by completing the two-mile race in 11:48.7, 30 seconds ahead of second.
 
    Natasha Carcano, UT Tyler, finished with a time of 19:53.2 and a 19th place finish to open her 2021 cross country season for the Patriots. She paced a UTT squad that finished in fifth place for the event.
 
    Odette Fernandez, Texas A&M-Kingsville, made her collegiate debut at Lynn Creek Park, competing in the 2021 DBU Orville Rodgers XC Opener. She was the Javelina women's top finisher, leading the team to a seventh-place finish. Fernandez clocked in at 20:32.5 in the 5k race, placing 23rd individually.
 
    Betty Bajik, West Texas A&M, made her collegiate debut on Saturday with a 15th place finish at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock. The Arlington native covered the 5,000-meter course in 19:26.9 to help the Lady Buffs win the team title ahead of hosts TTU and UTEP.
 
    Calista Segura, UT Tyler, was the top freshman finisher and second overall finisher in her first collegiate meet for UT Tyler at the DBU Orville Rogers XC Opener. Segura finished in 29th place overall in the race with a time of 20:41.5.
 
    Maggie Rittmeyer, St. Edward’s, brought home 16th place in her first collegiate race, finishing in 19:27.3 on the 5K course at the DBU opener. Rittmeyer averaged 6:18.5 per mile.
 
    Daesha Brathwaite, Cameron, made an impact for Cameron in her first collegiate race, finishing with the team's top time at the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational. The Bridgetown, Barbados native ran a time of 6:19.40 and finishing in 19th place in the two-mile race, leading the Aggies to a fifth-place finish as a team.
