ASU claims second straight baseball tournament title

The Angelo State Rams claimed their second straight Lone Star Conference Baseball Tournament Championship after defeating West Texas A&M 10-4 on Saturday.

The Rams rallied to claim their fifth tournament title in program history after falling behind early in the first, thanks to a two-run homer from WT third baseman Adam Becker. The junior all-tournament team member cranked his seventh of the tournament to put the Buffs in front.

ASU responded in the bottom half of the second inning when Tripp Clark's sacrifice fly to center field brought home Thomas Cain and marked the first of four runs in the inning. The Rams also got an RBI single from tournament MVP Austin Beck. The freshman from Allen, Texas, went 2-for-4 in the game as he finished the tournament 8-for-13 (.692). Beck added a home run later in the game, one of three for the Rams on the evening.

Despite the impressive offense barrage in the fourth, WT kept the game within reach, clawing back to within one run off the bat of all-tournament performer Eddie Savoie to make the score 4-3 after two and a half innings.

In the bottom half of the third, the Rams continued to find the groove offensively with back-to-back RBI doubles from Kamdem Kelton and Thomas Cain. A home run from Justin Harris pushed the lead to 7-3.

A big night on the mound from reliever Kyle Moseley cooled the Buffs' bats. The sophomore lefty allowed just one hit and one walk in 4.0 innings of work as he picked up the win.

Carson Childers would come on in the eighth for the final two innings as ASU closed out the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record for the second year in a row.

ASU receives the LSC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. The field for the South Central Region will be announced on Sunday, May 15, via an online selection show at NCAA.com starting at 9 p.m. CT.
