Ivanova Yanes of Texas A&M-Kingsville and
Nicholas Gonzalez of St. Edward's were named the 2023 Lone Star Conference Cross Country Academic Runners of the Year and are among the 10 members of the LSC Cross Country All-Academic Teams as the conference announced academic awards on Wednesday (Oct. 25).
LSC academic honors recognize student-athlete accomplishments in the classroom and on the cross country course. To be eligible for the All-Academic Team, individuals must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The All-Academic teams are selected by vote of the league's sports information directors.
A sophomore from Hollywood, Fla., Yanes is majoring in kinesiology and carries a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. During the 2023 season, Yanes was individual medalist at both the OLLU Saints Collegiate and the SFA Lumberjack Invitational. She posted one of the top 6k times in NCAA Division II, the South Central Region and the LSC, and twice set the Texas A&M-Kingsville 6k record.
Gonzalez, a two-time LSC All-Academic Team honoree, is a behavioral neuroscience major and carries a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. The senior from El Paso, Texas, recorded a career-best 8k time at the September Chili Pepper Cross Country Festival and placed 31st at the 2023 LSC Championships to help St. Edward's to a fifth-place team finish.
Yanes is joined on the LSC All-Academic women's team by DBU juniors KayCee Keller and Emme O'Donnell; Faith Brothers of St. Edward's; and Itzela Darkenwald of Western New Mexico.
In addition to Gonzalez, the LSC All-Academic men's team honorees includes Adam Whitehead of DBU; Aiden Zingone of Lubbock Christian; Emmanuel Serta of St. Edward's; and Josphat Langat of Texas A&M International.
