Central Washington junior cornerback Dominic Wieburg picked up Lone Star Conference Football Academic Player of the Year honors to headline the football academic awards, it was announced by league officials Thursday (Nov. 16).
Wieburg, who is from Sammamish, Wash. and majoring in Law and Justice, boasts a 3.91 grade-point average. He is now a two-time All-Academic Team selection. On the field, Wieburg made 39 tackles and grabbed an interception to help the Wildcats earn a NCAA Division II playoff berth.
Wieburg was joined on the academic team by teammates Tyler Flanagan, Brett McCalla and Tanner Volk, Angelo State’s Alfred Grear, Eastern New Mexico’s Bailey Adair and Hunter St. John, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Luke Shaffer, UT Permian Basin’s Ben Patterson, Western New Mexico’s LJ Vongsy and Western Oregon’s Keating Hinkley.
St. John (2022 LSC Football Academic Player of the Year) and Hinkley were LSC All-Academic Team selections last year.
The All-Academic team is chosen by the league’s sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for their entire collegiate career.
