LSC Golf Weekly Release - Week 1

 
Lone Star Conference men's and women's golf teams opened their respective 2023-24 seasons facing top Division II region and national competition. On the women's side, West Texas A&M carded a three-round 874 (288-294-292) to win the Swan Memorial Tournament while Oklahoma Christian battled through damp weather conditions to claim the Oklahoma Invitational title (296-294-590). For the men, St. Mary's (384-377-364-1125) and West Texas A&M (385-384-364-1133) got a look at Division II region opponents at The Writz at Mile High tournament.
 
The DBU Classic headlines the upcoming women's schedule with play Sunday-Monday-Tuesday (Sept. 17-19) at the Robson Ranch Wildhorse Golf Club in Denton, Texas. Six LSC teams are scheduled to play.  ...  LSC men's teams compete at two tournaments Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 18-19): The Farmers Insurance Sam Proal Invitational (Pueblo, Colo.) and the NSU Men's Golf Classic (Muskogee, Okla.).

The Lone Star Conference was well-represented in the preseason coaches polls (Sept. 1). Defending national champion DBU lists #1 followed by #4 West Texas A&M, and #19 Oklahoma Christian in the women's Mizuno WGCA rankings. Four other teams received votes: UT Tyler, St. Mary's, Midwestern State and Texas A&M International.  ...  The men's Bushnell/Golfweek poll has three Top 25 LSC teams -- #4 Oklahoma Christian, #19 Cameron, #22 MSU – and both West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico receiving votes.  
Longtime Cameron men's golf coach Jerry Hrnciar was selected as a 2023 inductee to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor. Hrnciar coached Aggies men's golf for 43 years, leading the team to 21 national tournament appearances and 11 LSC titles. Read more here.

MEN
Vertti Perala, Oklahoma Christian, Fr., Business, Lempaala, Finland (Lempaala Lukio HS)
Vertti Perala opened his Oklahoma Christian playing career with a tied-for-first-place finish at the 2023 GAC Preview hosted by Southern Nazarene. Perala put up three solid rounds, including a 67 over the first 18 holes (67-68-70-205).
 
WOMEN
Gam Songprasert, West Texas A&M, Jr., Accounting, Chiang Mai, Thailand (Chiang Rai International)
Gam Songprasert led the Lady Buffs to a 34-stroke win over CSU Pueblo at The Swan Memorial hosted by Colorado Christian. In a field featuring multiple in-region opponents, Songprasert opened tournament play with a six-under-par (66), carding rounds of 66-75-73 for a two-under 214.
