LSC Cross Country Weekly Release - Week 3


Upcoming: Lone Star Conference teams will compete in Oklahoma and California on Saturday (Sept. 23) to close the first half of the season. Six men's and seven women's squads will be at the Cowboy Jamboree hosted by Oklahoma State while both Western New Mexico teams race at the CSSM Cougar Challenge in San Marcos, Calif.

Last Weekend: West Texas A&M claimed both team and individual titles at the Texas Tech Open (Sept. 15) behind four runners listing among the Top 15 finishers in both the men's and women's races.  ...  DBU women finished runner-up to the host Aggies at the Texas A&M Invitational (Sept. 15). DBU's Adam Whitehead (12th) and UT Tyler's Landon Thornton (21st) topped LSC men's finishers at the Texas A&M Invitational.  ...  Texas A&M International sophomore Ivanova Yanes smashed the team's 6k record with a 21:26.8 showing at the women's UIW Invitational (Sept. 16).  ...  UAFS prepped for the Cowboy Stampede competing in the Missouri Southern Stampede (Sept. 15).

MEN
William Amponsah, West Texas A&M, Jr., Sports & Exercise Science, Agona Swedru, Ghana (Swedru School of Business)
William Amposah outpaced the 165-runner field to take medalist honors at the Texas Tech Open (Sept. 15). He finished the 8k race in 24:29.0 with a 4:55.5 split for his second individual title in 2023. It is also the fastest 8k time in the LSC to date. Amposah's performance led West Texas A&M to the team title (41 points) and bettering NCAA Division I teams Oklahoma, Texas Tech and UTEP.
 
WOMEN
Sarah Koomson, West Texas A&M, Fr., General Studies, Adom Banso, Ghana
Leading from the start and running by herself for over half of the race, West Texas A&M freshman Sarah Koomson won the Texas Tech Open 6k in a 21:50.0 time (5:51.3 split). She finished 43 seconds ahead of the second-place runner and paced the Lady Buffs to the team title over host runner-up Texas Tech and third-place Oklahoma.
 
FRESHMAN RUNNERS OF THE WEEK
 
MEN
David Soto, UT Tyler, Fr., Accounting, Winnsboro, Texas (Winnsboro HS)
David Soto posted a 25:15.5 time at the Texas A&M Invitational (Sept. 15), second lowest time among Division II freshmen at the 8k invitational and a Lone Star Conference Top 10 time for the season to date. Soto was the second UT Tyler finisher at the race and 34th overall.
 
WOMEN
Lesli Salas, Dallas Baptist, Fr., San Angelo, Texas (Cornerstone Christian School)
DBU freshman Lesli Salas helped lift the 20th-ranked Lady Patriots to a second-place finish at the Texas A&M Invitational (Sept. 15). Salas placed 12th in a field of 115 runners crossing the finish line with a time of 18:12.5 in the 5K event. Hers was the top freshman time among all Division II runners at the meet.
