It's Championship Saturday for the 14 men's and 16 women's Lone Star Conference cross country teams. The conference races are the first step in the 2025 postseason ahead of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional and National Championships scheduled over the next four weeks.
 
2025 LSC Championship Notes
The spotlight shines on Lone Star Conference cross country teams as they hit the course at AP Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas, for the LSC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships Saturday morning (Oct. 25). The women’s 6k race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the men’s 8k at 9:45 a.m. CT.  ...  West Texas A&M swept both team titles a year ago with the men winning their 12th straight and the women their second in a row. Sarah Koomson (WT) returns to defend her individual women’s title while the men will have a new individual champion.

Women: Eleven all-conference runners from the 2024 championship are likely among the women's field. In addition to returning champion Koomson, last season's LSC Runner of the Year Julie Lafare is among five WT all-conference finishers expected in the starting box. ... No women's team has posted a perfect 15 points in the conference meet. Angelo State took the 1988 title with 16 points while WT (2024) totaled 17 points a year ago. ... This is the 41st women's cross country LSC championship with the first trophy awarded in 1984. Current conference members ASU and Midwestern State have each won seven team titles with West Texas A&M (4), DBU (2), Lubbock Christian (1) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (1) on the all-time winner's list. ... WT and ASU have each had seven athletes take the individual title.

Men: The LSC will see a new name atop the individual champion list as the last three winners have moved on. Ian Rono of Texas A&M International and West Texas A&M duo Adrian Legarreta and Matthys Bourse are one-two-three on the top 8k times list this season. Legarreta and Bourse are joined by UT Tyler's David Soto as returning all-conference finishers from a year ago. ... Five times in the 42-year history of the LSC men's championship a team has won with a perfect 15 points, including the last two years with WT reaching perfection. ... Year one of the LSC men's championship was in 1982. WT carries a streak of 12 straight team titles (2013-24) into the 2025 meet. Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M-Kingsville have each claimed two team wins. ... With the last four individual titles, WT totals nine individual champions, including the last four. Cameron and ENMU each have two medalists with TAMUK at one.

Regional, National Races Ahead
NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship season begins with the South Central Regional on November 8 at Walking Stick Golf Club in Pueblo, Colo. Hosted by CSU Pueblo, men's and women's regional meet information is available at this LINK.
 
Teams and individuals who qualify out of the regional will head to the Division II Men's and Women's National Championship scheduled November 22 at Kenosha, Wis., and the Wayne E. Dannehl National XC Course. Information for the 2025 national championships:  Men  Women
 
Week Seven Competition
  • Southwestern Showdown (Oct. 18): The regular season meet schedule closed with DBU capturing both the women's 6k and men's 8k team races. Hunter Lemma won the men's individual title (26:15.2) as the Patriots went one-two-three-four-eight for 18 points. DBU collected 38 points as Avery Frank finished third (24:05.2) with Mae Delrot (5th) and Berkley Funderburg (9th) among the top 10. Samantha Bustos was the top Sul Ross State finisher as the Lobos placed ninth on the team list.

RUNNERS OF THE WEEK  |  Competitions October 14-20

WOMEN
Avery Frank, DBU, Fr., Communications, Liberty Hill, Texas
DBU freshman Avery Frank led the Lady Patriots to a first-place team finish at the regular-season closing Southwestern Showdown, crossing the finish line at third place. Frank posted a time of 24:05.2 in the 6K event while averaging 6:27.6 per mile as the first DBU and Division II runner among the 78 competitors.
 
MEN
Hunter Lemma, DBU, Fr., Broadcast & Digital Media, Plano, Texas
DBU claimed the team title at the Southwestern Showdown behind the first-place finish of freshman Hunter Lemma. Lemma posted his first individual victory with a time of 26:15.2 in the 8K event averaging 5:16.9 per mile as the Patriot runners were the first four individual finishers.
